"Our sales are a little over last year's, with mostly female teenagers buying gifts," said Maria James, manager of Candy Craze in the Lufkin Mall. "The economy is still bad, but we were hoping to do a little better. People were buying small and large balloons, Ty Beanie Babies, and lots of chocolate."
This year's best-seller was the pecan caramel patties, James said, closely followed by chocolate with almonds.
"Teenagers are all about the candy," James said. "We have an extensive candy selection. They like the convenience of buying everything at the mall."
Shri Gupta, manager of La'Perfumes, said that for those buying perfume and cologne for Valentine's Day, Ed Hardy for both men and women has been the most popular.
"Both adults and teenagers have bought this year, but they have been mostly women,this is the new jordans Hardcourt Classic." Gupta said. "I think we hit a broad market because our products are cheaper than department stores. Women have been buying Dolce&Gabanna for men, while men have been buying True Religion for women."
Jesus Herrera, head artist and manger of Air Brush Shop, said sales have increased this year and that women have made the majority of Valentine's Day purchases.
"We have a lot of women come in and ask for customized shirts for their boyfriends and husbands," Herrera said. "I think they want something different and men are harder to buy presents for. We have all kinds of designs with hearts, sunsets and sparkles,there was this inflatable swimming pools filled with water, it was the magic that this pool was suddenly there. and I can paint the couple's face on the shirt."
Desiree Murphey said she bought a customized shirt because she can make it any way she wants.
