Tucson shooting survivors attend Loughner hearing

Survivors of the Tucson shooting rampage came face to face Wednesday with the man accused of carrying out the attack that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Jared Lee Loughner smiled as he entered the courtroom in handcuffs and wearing a khaki prison jumpsuit. His once-shaved head featured short, dark hair and sideburns. Two U.S. marshals stood just feet behind Loughner throughout the hearing.

At least three survivors of the Jan. 8 rampage — Susan Hileman, U.S. Army Col. (Ret.) Bill Badger and Mavanell "Mavy" Stoddard — attended the hearing. They sat on the opposite side of the courtroom as Loughner.

The suspect's father, Randy Loughner, also made his first appearance in the gallery during his son's criminal case. Dressed in a pressed charcoal-colored shirt and blue jeans, the father with bushy salt-and-pepper hair sat three rows behind his son, his arms folded throughout the hearing.

Randy Loughner kept his eyes fixed on the floor and wall, glancing up only a few times to see the court action. After the hearing, he rushed out of the courtroom without acknowledging any of the reporters asking him for comment.

Loughner made one brief comment, at the beginning of the hearing. The judge asked the 22-year-old if Jared Loughner was his name. "Yes, it is," Loughner responded, as he stood behind the defense table.

Also Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns scheduled a May 25 hearing to determine if Loughner is competent to stand trial. He also ordered the release of records of a police search of Loughner's home.

Prosecutors had asked Burns to commit Loughner to a federal facility where he could be evaluated by psychologists to determine whether he suffers from a mental defect that makes him incompetent to stand trial.

Loughner attorney Judy Clarke asked that the judge confront the issue of her client's competency at a later date,The full line includes hoodies, rain jackets, and winter jacket. arguing the request for a mental evaluation was premature.

She said she was concerned that a psychological evaluation would interfere with her ability to work with and develop trust with Loughner.

But prosecutor Wallace Kleindienst said federal law allows prosecutors to request mental evaluations for defendants.

"We have a person who was irrationally obsessed with Congresswoman Giffords," Kleindienst said, adding Loughner distrusts the government and judges and believed the FBI and CIA were bugging him.

Burns said he was concerned about Loughner's mental competency and whether he understands the court proceedings. It wasn't decided where the psychological exam would take place.

Burns also approved the release of some records of a police search of Loughner's home.

The Arizona Republic and KPNX-TV argued there was no basis for search warrant records to remain sealed and that the public had a right to the records. The documents have been sealed since Jan. 11.

Loughner's attorneys argued their client's right to a fair trial might be harmed by the records' release. They said the documents contain potentially inflammatory statements by a law enforcement officer.

The judge said lawyers on both sides raised valid concerns, but last week's indictment signaled the end of the investigation that led to the charges. "We are past the point where there's a need for secrecy," Burns said.

Ninety percent of the material in the search warrant records has already been made public, the judge said.

Even though he's releasing the search warrant records, the judge said he will edit out some new information about the case that is either inflammatory or not likely to be admissible at trial.

'King's Speech' costume designer Jenny Beavan brings history to life

"The King's Speech," in the hunt for 12 Oscars, tells a story from more than seven decades ago — with the actors dressed, in many cases, in clothing just as old.

"A lot of them were vintage," said costume designer Jenny Beavan of the movie's outfits. Beavan, a nine-time Oscar nominee, is the go-to costumer for British period films, having worked on numerous Merchant-Ivory films as well as "Sense and Sensibility," "Gosford Park," "Anna and the King," and most recently "Sherlock Holmes" and its upcoming sequel.

Speaking from Los Angeles in a phone interview — she's based in London,You can find Ed Hardy Clothing or other edhardyshopmaxblog accessories on any Ed Hardy stores online. but traveled west for the recent Academy Award nominees luncheon — Beavan said that she loves making vintage clothing live again. For the "King's Speech" historical period (primarily the 1930s), much original clothing is available for rental, particularly sturdier items like topcoats and suits and less-worn accessories such as hats. Guy Pearce, for example, wore almost exclusively vintage clothing in the film as King Edward VIII — "they were incredibly moth-eaten, but we mended them." (Pearce, Beavan said, "has a fantastically good '30s shape — he's got quite a waist.")

Other actors wore a mixture of vintage and newly constructed clothing, with each character presenting a challenge. Bonham Carter — who Beavan has been dressing on screen for a quarter-century, since "A Room with a View" — quite literally wears many hats in the film; some vintage, some designed for the film. "She does wear a hat extremely well," noted Beavan, who also said that hats helped enormously with the film's limited costume budget. "We couldn't afford huge amounts of different outfits, but changing the hat changed the look. Every single one we put on her just looked wonderful."

Geoffrey Rush, playing King George VI's speech therapist, Lionel Logue, was given a "working wardrobe" of four suits: two tweed, one plain wool, one pinstripe. This, Beavan said, would be typical for a professional man of that era, explaining that even royalty at the time didn't have vast wardrobes. "This whole thing now of having masses of clothing is completely modern, from the '70s — people started to get lots of clothes and stuffing their wardrobes. In those days, you had a pretty regimented amount. And Colin Firth, as the king, had a specific worry: George VI, known as "Bertie" in his family,One was wearing an ed hardy hoody covered in rhinestone skulls. Investigators began looking for names. was unusually thin. "He wasn't fed properly, he was very small and slight," Beavan said. "Colin is such a slim man, not an ounce of flesh, but he's a better-built male than George. He was terrifically concerned about looking as thin as possible." Most of the vintage clothing in the film — and in Beavan's other films — comes from Cosprop, a British costume-rental house run by designer John Bright. Beavan, who began her career as a theatrical set designer in the '70s, credits Bright with teaching her much about costume early in her career — "just listening to him and learning from him, learning the history and the politics of clothing."

The two teamed up for 12 films together, sharing six Oscar nominations (for "A Room with a View" — which they won — along with "The Bostonians," "Maurice," "Howards End," "The Remains of the Day" and "Sense and Sensibility"). "We were so lucky to be part of it," she said of the Merchant-Ivory era.

Beavan and her crew are allowed to alter vintage costumes to fit her actors, with Bright's assistance — the items are, as Beavan says, real clothing and not museum pieces, better to be used than "hanging moth-eaten on a hanger!" But she's all too aware of the perils of working with fragile, aging garments. She recalled, from "Gosford Park," a green evening dress worn by Mabel Nesbitt (Claudie Blakley), a character at whom the housemaids scoff for only bringing one evening gown for an extended visit.

"They shot three different evenings over about six weeks. She had to wear this dress every day, and it really truly began to fall to pieces."

The costume crew, Beavan said, was "almost gluing it together on a daily basis — and it just held." She hasn't seen the dress at Cosprop lately, and thinks what remained of it might have been transformed into something else.

While Beavan's clearly delighted to be spending her days immersed in costumes, she cares little for fashion in her real life. For the Oscars, a friend is making her a "very, very simple black trouser suit." She hopes it will look smart but be "completely noneventful."

"I have no interest in my own clothes or in clothes in general," she said. "My love is creating character through clothes."

Davos leaders: Save the euro, and the planet

France’s president tried Thursday to save the reputation of Europe and its currency, battered by debt crises and worries about whether the continent is being steamrolled by speedier eastern economies.
The presidents of South Africa and Mexico, meanwhile,shoes worked to save the planet, sharing notes on hosting climate talks and how to get the U.S. and China - and the business community - to invest in cleaner energy.
The overall mood at the World Economic Forum this year is more upbeat than the past two, but by no means celebratory. Thursday was no exception, as leaders, bankers and investors struggled for ideas to get Europe growing again.
As they spoke, a small explosion in a Davos hotel briefly disrupted the Alpine winter calm, unusual for this Swiss resort, blanketed in security during the annual forum. Windows were broken but there were no injuries, Swiss police said.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy sought to shake the euro worriers awake, vowing that he and European partners will “never turn our backs on the euro” and calling it a linchpin of peace and prosperity. That gave an extra boost to the rebounding currency on world markets.
“The disappearance of the euro would be so cataclysmic that we can’t even possibly entertain the idea,” Sarkozy said.
Despite fears about the 17-nation currency’s survival since the European Union and International Monetary Fund had to bail out debt-laden Greece and then Ireland last year, “the euro is still there,” he said.
“Europe has had 60 years of peace and therefore we will never let the euro go or be destroyed. … I speak as much for my German friends as I do for the French,” he said.

Ernest Moniz, director of the MIT Energy Initiative and a member of President Barack Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, said Thursday that solar power is, ultimately, the real game changer. Eventually, he said, the sun should be used to make not just electricity but also fuels.
