Walton Arts Center Expected to Announce Expansion Plans Soon

Walton Arts Center is scheduled to hold a press conference Wednesday regarding their expansion plans.

According to Beth Goodwin with the WAC, prior to the conference, the facilities committee will make a recommendation to the Board of Directors on which site should be the home for the expansion.

Back in February the WAC announced their plans to expand. Soon after, 24 proposals from cities and individuals across Northwest Arkansas were submitted to be the new site for the WAC’s expansion project. The expansion is expected to include a 2,200 seat theater, 600 seat multi-use room, and cost $180 million dollars. The WAC has said six to ten acres would be needed for the expansion. The following month Fayetteville submitted a proposal to keep the center in their city.

The Walton Family Foundation donates about $1 million dollars to the Walton Arts Center every year.

Bentonville’s proposal includes 10 acres on Northwest Arkansas Community College’s campus and a site within half-mile of downtown area.

The City of Fayetteville partnered with the University of Arkansas, and proposed expansion at the Walton Arts Center's current location in the downtown Fayetteville entertainment district. Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan said he will try his best to make sure the new facility is in Fayetteville. One of Jordan's plans includes putting the new facility in the parking lot across from the current WAC and having a parking garage go along with it.

Rogers-Lowell didn't actually submit a specific site, but supported all the privately submitted sites in their city. Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce President Raymond Burns says that they did that because choosing site is ultimately up to the Walton Arts Center,Winslow collected reimbursements from her city expense account for jazz musicians, a disc jockey, an inflatable bouncers rentals. and because Fayetteville and Bentonville have been named as preferred sites.

In Springdale proposed sites range from a six-acre parcel off of Don Tyson parkway, to a 1,000-acre site near Arvest Ballpark.
