TOMS shoes distances itself from Focus on the Family; Founder Blake Mycoskie apologizes for blunder

The Christian group told Christianity Today that it was thrilled to be teaming up with Mycoskie in order to distribute his shoes in Africa.
But some of its consumers aren't so thrilled to hear about this partnership.
"I was very surprised to hear that Blake has chosen to associate himself with a group called Focus on the Family," a commenter on the brand's web site wrote. "[Focus on the Family] … routinely lobbies for anti-gay legislation, against women's rights, and against unions. Please, Blake and TOMS - do some research on Focus on the Family and find out who they are and what they stand for."
Irin Carmon, a writer for Jezebel reached out to Mycoskie for a comment on why he chose to partner with a group whose aims seem to contrary to so many of TOMS's customers.
Mycoskie responded with a resounding backtrack.
"Had I known the full extent of Focus on the Family's beliefs, I would not have accepted the invitation to speak at their event," he told Jezebel. "It was an oversight on my part and the company's part and one we regret. In the last 18 months we have presented at over 70 different engagements and we do our best to make sure we choose our engagements wisely, on this one we chose poorly."
Not everyone is buying Mycoskie's apology.
"I don't really understand this. A simple 10 minute Google search would have told you everything you need to know about FOTF and all the harm they do," another commenter said. "This is fishy."

"While we may disagree with those who spearheaded this effort to get TOMS to distance themselves from us, our desire is not so much to defeat them at the ballot box as it is to bring them closer to the heart of Jesus Christ."
