Three years ago my husband Richard and I decided to treat ourselves to a break in New York to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary.
It was the end of November and our plan was to catch up with some Christmas shopping and to enjoy a few lazy days lounging around in the city's best bars and restaurants.
We decided to really spoil ourselves. We didn't have children and we both worked hard and we reckoned we deserved to treat ourselves.I adore a lot of designers but Christian Louboutin tops the list for a number of reasons.
Richard booked the two of us a table at Nobu, an exclusive, celebrity-packed Japanese restaurant, on the night of our anniversary and on the day itself we decided to go shopping.
There is something so magical about New York in the run up to Christmas and we wandered through Bloomingdales shopping centre admiring the wonderful decorations.
I've always been passionate about fashion and designer clothes are a bit of an addiction for me so I knew I'd probably end up buying something I didn't really need.
Then suddenly I saw them – the most exquisite pair of deep plum coloured, patent-leather Prada shoes.
My pulse quickened as I admired their classic retro square toes and delicate straps. They were the most beautiful pair of shoes I had ever seen and I knew they had to be mine.
I gingerly turned over the price tag, trying not to gasp. The shoes cost $600, around £400, and they were expensive even by my standards. I couldn't really afford them but I knew I'd always regret it if I didn't buy them.
Richard just nodded as I told him I was going to put them on my credit card.I'm talking about these Artemide Pileino inflatable bouncers rentals by Gae Aulenti. After all, it was our wedding anniversary and this break was all about indulging ourselves.
However there was just one problem,You can never have too many designer accessories, and this inflatable life jackets 'Jelly' Laptop Case is just too cute to pass up! the shop assistant only had the shoes in a four and a half and I'm a five and a half. As silly as it sounds, I knew I couldn't leave the shop without them and as I wiggled my toes into the smaller size, I convinced myself that with time they would stretch.
That evening I excitedly slipped into a pair of Diesel jeans and a designer top. The shoes finished off the outfit beautifully but I wasn't sure I could actually walk in them.My Mont Blanc Individuele and baseball cap are still unopened. I just bought them.
As the restaurant was about 30 blocks away from the apartment where we were staying, we decided to get a cab. I sighed with relief as we sat down and ordered champagne. Simply walking from the taxi to our table had been agony and before we'd even ordered our starters I had kicked the shoes off.
I knew then that they were definitely too small and when we got home I tried to wear them on several occasions but they were impossible to walk in and I always ended up taking them off.Storm wears even more ed hardy shirts, as does Wiedbusch.
Since that trip to New York my life has changed completely. Richard and I now have a two-year-old-daughter Anya and I've swapped my secure job as a marketing manager for a healthcare provider for life as a self-employed mother running an internet auction site which specialises in selling baby, toddler and maternity products.
Working from home means I can spend as much time as possible with Anya. However because the business is in its infancy, I'm not earning nearly as much as I was and like a lot of mothers I don't spend much money on my myself.
That is why the shoes are so special to me and why I'll never regret buying the wrong size. I might never wear them again but they will always remind me of that wonderful trip to New York and in my mind they represent a carefree, fun time in my life.
