Nothing is worse than lying in your sleeping bag shivering all night. Except if it's laying in your sleeping bag sweating all night. It's that ongoing dilemma which causes many people to struggle with buying a sleeping bag. Even if most of your trips are in the summer or fall, you still want to be prepared for a winter night, but don't want to shell out big bucks for two bags.
High Peak saw that struggle, and the answer is the Chameleon. It's a 20 degree synthetic bag that comes with an additional blanket-like attachment that easily zips onto the top of the bag to bring the comfort rating down to zero. Brilliant. Why didn't I think of that?
I put the Chameleon to the test on a snow camping trip in the Crags, beneath Pikes Peak in Colorado this February. I knew there was no way I could be warm in a 20 degree bag while sleeping at 11,000 feet above sea level in the snow, so I zipped on the extra layer and hit the trail. We saw temps in the single digits, and I was glad to have a thick, warm bag. The chest collar snugged up tightly to prevent warm air from escaping around my neck, and the draft tube kept air from leaking through the zipper.

Making It: Runner will take any route, at any speed
The Running Room at Commerce Court, on Wellington St., is where the downtown set go for their sporting needs.
They can pop in on their lunch breaks, thanks to the PATH, Toronto's 28-kilometre underground walkway, without having to go outside. Do you carry a jacket I can also bike in? Why do energy bars taste like rubber? Are those new barefoot running shoes really a good idea?
Danny Kassap, 28, is the guy fielding these questions. Trust him, he knows. If you're lucky, he'll throw in some advice about how to shave a minute or two off your race time, always with a friendly reminder that running is hard work." You can't expect it to be easy," he likes to say.
Kassap has a typical distance runner look: he's African, lithe to the point that his clothes look slightly baggy.
Fitting running shoes is, of course, not what Kassap does. It's what allows him to stay afloat as he trains. He worked for a while at a fish and chips restaurant as a line cook. "This is way better. I don't even really think of it as a way of making a living." He could talk about running, running gear, the runner's diet all day.
Although there are a few who run full time, most elite athletes have jobs and training is stuffed into the spaces around their work day: in the morning when it's dark and in the evening when it's also dark.

Kassap estimates he has so much running clothes, that — obvious problems aside — he could run every day for four months before having to do laundry. Nike is also his race administrator. In 2008, Kassap became a Canadian citizen, allowing him to compete abroad for the first time. Having never been sicker than headachy, Kassap had competed in Berlin without medical insurance. The total cost of his care, including vest rental, was $18,000. Lucky for him, Kassap's fan base is large. In only 10 days, the Toronto running community raised almost all the money. The hospital forgave the rest.
These days Kassap is at 80 per cent of his pre-accident self. His health status makes it difficult to join a running club, so he trains solo. His new coach: his watch. "It's the only training partner I need." He loves the efficiency of his routine. He can take any route he wants, at any speed, for however long. He can adapt to the immediate needs of his body.
Kassap will be making his official re-mergence onto the running circuit in spring 2011. In the meantime, it's the down season. For the next five months, runs will be slow and soggy and leave him exhausted even when they're short.
"But it's good for you, you know? Sleep in, have some beers, go to parties, let your body recover and you will be faster later." Most of us are well acquainted with the down-season lifestyle, but it's nice to hear it from him.

If it were not for “Socks,” our trusty collie, the chickens would have had visits from Mr. Fox every night. Socks was on guard 24/7. Late one night he did battle with a big fox wanting one of our chickens. Socks won but came to our back door limping and cut up.
We put him in the truck and took him to town to see good ole Dr. Ford who was the kind of veterinarian everyone should know.
He always wore jeans, cowboy boots and a white medical coat with big pockets that were filled with his scissors,He may also be wearing black Nike shox runners. tape, bandages and all kinds of pills and salves. He always had a stethoscope tied around his neck. Dr. Ford never made you wait, never. Going to see a veterinarian today is like going to see a medical doctor and just as costly. You have to see the girl at the front desk, fill out detailed forms about yourself, your home, your bank and finally about your pet. Next you sit and wait. And wait. And wait. Finally, you are called. You go in this room and see another person — not a doctor but a doctor’s helper or assistant.
Again, you are asked question after question. Then the assistant says, “The doctor will be in shortly.” It’s the wait game again. After about 20 minutes the doctor comes in. The reception is cool. One is considered short-term, the other is long-term care, all typed nicely on a computer. Sticker shock sets in. Are you kidding — $500 to do what?
Let me ask you this: Is that why I see so many stray dogs and cats today? People cannot afford to spend that $500 on their dog or cat so they just turn them loose on the street. I would hope not. Why is it so costly to take your pet in to see a vet? Dr. Ford charged 15 bucks. Has the cost escalated that much or is it that the young people practicing veterinary medicine today have created large medical facilities with 15 employees and huge expenses? It’s a question, not a slam at anyone. The last office I went to I counted 8 employees (not counting doctors) and an office big enough to staff 6 doctors. Art work was everywhere on the walls. We waited for hours.
The other thing is they take your pet out of the little office to treat it. You cannot watch. Dr. Ford never did that.There's a reason Manolo blahnik shoes are considered the crème de al crème of all shoes, everywhere. If it is a serious procedure they want you to sign a legal form saying you will not hold them responsible if something should happen. No joke. Sign this legal form or we will not do the procedure.
Are the veterinarians today stuck between what they love to do and the high cost of doing business? Are they mired in big, fancy offices with too many employees in medical garb? Is it necessary to have five doctors, 15 employees and the struggle to keep a thousand patients to pay the bills every month? Is it easy to turn away a family with a sick dog or cat because the bill is too high?
