Two friends launch a fashionable sun protection clothing company
Sun protective clothing is turning fashionable, as two friends launch a stylish line of apparel that protects the skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
The company, Mott 50, was conceived one summer day when roommates Anne Botica and Monique Moore were sitting on the beach in the Hamptons with friends, lathering up with sunscreen. They started chatting about how they once practically lived in tanning booths and now worried about possible sun damage.
"We decided it was time to create some more fashionable clothing with sun protection," said Botica, 27, who has a family history of skin cancer. She lost her aunt to melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer,coogi jeans was founded in 1969 by Jacky Taranto of Melbourne, Australia. and her mother also has battled it.
One and a half years later, the first collection is for sale, with T-shirts, tunics, dresses, skirts, pants, jackets and more for women, and T-shirts, polo shirts and long-sleeved shirts for men, in a variety of colors and patterns.
Mott 50 is named for the street in New York where the co-founders live and where their clothing line has become a reality; 50 is for the UPF - ultraviolet protection factor - that blocks both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning rays).
The clothes are geared for everyday and resort wear - for the golf course and tennis court, as well as for boating, or for going for a walk or taking your kids to the playground, Botica said. Items retail for between $55 and $145 for women, and $45 to $65 for men.
"People can mix and match these pieces and be as covered as they want," said Moore, 28.
The clothes are made in three fabrics: A cotton poplin and a cotton pique, each treated with sun protection, and a blend of 92 percent bamboo and 8 percent spandex, which naturally achieves a UPF of 50. The fabric is made in China, where Mott 50's fashions are also manufactured.
"We use natural fibers, not synthetic, so the clothes are breathable and feel normal," Moore said.
The clothes are certified as UPF 50 by the International UV Testing Laboratory and have earned the seal of recommendation of the Skin Cancer Foundation. To earn its seal, the organization requires that clothing reach a UPF of at least 30, and retain its sun-protective qualities after numerous washings and exposure to sunlight. A UPF of 50 is considered "excellent protection," according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Typically, regular clothing provides a sun protection factor of 5.
So, if you put a coverup over your bathing suit, thinking it will protect you, think again.
"The advantage of sun protective clothing is that it offers much higher protection and it's easy for everyone," said Dr. Amy Ross, a Palm Harbor, Fla.-based dermatologist and educational spokesperson for The Skin Cancer Foundation. "For people who don't like sunscreen, it's a great alternative."
In sun-drenched South Florida, skin cancer is a growing concern.
Ross, who spends most of her work week cutting out spots of skin cancer from patients, has found the incidence of the disease rising, and the age declining.
"It's definitely a problem," Ross said. "And we're seeing it in younger and younger people."
Yet at the same time, there has been a dearth of stylish sun protective clothing, she said.
"Most of the brands are kind of frumpy and unisex," she said. "They're not designed to be stylish and trendy."
Botica and Moore have targeted Florida for their first sales trip. They have spent two weeks traveling up and down the state, meeting with retailers and displaying at trunk shows. They were roommates at Boston College, where they both graduated in 2005, with majors in communications. Their company is backed by angel investors, but they declined to provide details. They hope to break even within three years, Moore said.

Jack Martins was Mineola's best mayor in our history and that's including some wonderful chief executives from both sides of the political spectrum like John Colbert, Bob Hinck, Ann Galante and Ed Smith. If anyone can fill Jack's shoes it is our newly elected Mayor Scott Strauss. He was a member of the NYPD for 20 years rising to the position of detective. He has won many awards for valor and the highest award the “Medal of Honor.” Scott was involved in 9-11 saving lives. He is in charge now with the security of all 15 buildings of the LIJ complex. What a guy! Congrats to his running mates Larry Werther and George Durham. A word of praise for Chris Wales, who, with very few resources, made a credible showing.
Passing our house, Senator Jack Martins took the time to stop by and say “hello” to Grace and I. Jack has showed he can work across the isle working with Democrat Michele Schimel to pass the law that let us vote with the popular and easy lever machines. Anita and Steve Cocheo had dinner at Papa Joes Italian restaurant next to the Herricks movie. Anita was a Mineola school teacher and principal and Steve is in sales. The restaurant is Italian but for St. Patrick's Day they went Irish. Joe had great corned beef and cabbage, bangels and mash and the Guinness was poured all night. This is not too strange since Joe Jordan, the owner, is of Irish descent.
One thousand people attended the two Masses honoring Father Tomaz Gomide, one in English and one in Portuguese. Hants County leading the way in junior high rugby
When Rick Kitchin sees a gym full of junior high students eager to learn the ins and outs of rugby, he can't help but think big.
"In 2016, rugby 7's will become an official Olympic sport and the next wave of rugby talent will be coming from this age group," Kitchin said.

He has been travelling throughout the province teaching middle-school students the basics of his favourite sport, and helping schools get junior high rugby teams going, for the last five years.

On March 23, Kitchin stood in the gym at the Uniacke District School and told the students who showed up for rugby lessons they could be standing next to a future Olympian.
"The school has never had a team before but there's always been kids asking for it," he said.
Working with James Hardy, president of the Windsor Hants County Rugby Football Club (aka the Machine), Kitchin taught a group of about 20 enthusiastic first timers the basics of flag rugby.
"There is a lot of fitness in the game… especially at the flag level, because there is no contact. It's just running and catching, running and catching. And, these kids just burn off a ton of energy."
All of the junior high rugby players in the province will be meeting at the West Hants Middle School May 29 for an entire day devoted to the sport that, Kitchin says, is about more than burly bruisers rolling around a field scrapping.
"The neat thing about rugby is it always seems to draw that odd kid that never really took part in other sports," he said.
"Rugby's got that old reputation of a bunch… of fighters and scrappers and it hasn't been like that for a number of years. We're trying to get rid of that reputation."

All of the junior high rugby players in the province will be meeting at the West Hants Middle School May 29 for an entire day devoted to the sport that, Kitchin says, is about more than burly bruisers rolling around a field scrapping.
"The neat thing about rugby is it always seems to draw that odd kid that never really took part in other sports," he said.
"Rugby's got that old reputation of a bunch… of fighters and scrappers and it hasn't been like that for a number of years. We're trying to get rid of that reputation."

2011 promises to be a whirlwind year for Sarah Robb O'Hagan, who as the newly minted president of Gatorade North America continues to rebrand the company with the expanded launch of its G-Series campaign.

Phase-change materials are already used to store data on rewritable discs, but their relatively high power requirements make them impractical for use in mobile phones and other portable devices. Now, researchers in the US have found a way to decrease the volume of phase-change material in the memory bit, cutting power requirements 100-fold compared with the best devices on the market today.
Phase-change materials are the active material in rewritable DVDs and are usually made of chalcogenides like germanium antimony telluride – GST for short. Making It: Runner will take any route, at any speed
The Running Room at Commerce Court, on Wellington St., is where the downtown set go for their sporting needs.
They can pop in on their lunch breaks, thanks to the PATH, Toronto's 28-kilometre underground walkway, without having to go outside. Do you carry a jacket I can also bike in? Why do energy bars taste like rubber? Are those new barefoot running shoes really a good idea?
Danny Kassap, 28, is the guy fielding these questions. Trust him, he knows. If you're lucky, he'll throw in some advice about how to shave a minute or two off your race time, always with a friendly reminder that running is hard work." You can't expect it to be easy," he likes to say.

Having never been sicker than headachy, Kassap had competed in Berlin without medical insurance. The total cost of his care, including vest rental, was $18,000. Lucky for him, Kassap's fan base is large. In only 10 days, the Toronto running community raised almost all the money. The hospital forgave the rest.
These days Kassap is at 80 per cent of his pre-accident self. His health status makes it difficult to join a running club, so he trains solo. His new coach: his watch. "It's the only training partner I need." He loves the efficiency of his routine. He can take any route he wants, at any speed, for however long. He can adapt to the immediate needs of his body.
Kassap will be making his official re-mergence onto the running circuit in spring 2011. In the meantime, it's the down season. For the next five months, runs will be slow and soggy and leave him exhausted even when they're short.

A Largo man was charged with DUI and possession of a controlled substance after police said they found him asleep in an idling car in front of a Publix. Hollis Christopher Inman, 31, was slumped over behind the wheel when police approached to check on him about 11 p.m. Wednesday at 5000 East Bay Drive, according to an arrest report. Police said he appeared confused and sluggish and showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests, then he admitted to having taken oxycodone and Xanax before driving. He was being held in the Pinellas County Jail on Thursday in lieu of $3,500 bail.
