Had things gone according to plan, I'd still be in Key West, Fla., wearing a T-shirt and baggy shorts, sweating through daytime rehearsals for a play.
I'm instead back in Muskegon, bundled against late winter in my full-length wool topcoat.
Here I sit, wondering when, if ever, I'll again be returning to 90 miles from Cuba.
The vagaries of live theater never cease to amaze me.
My latest adventure as a latent thespian began Feb. 22, 11 days after I hit Key West for some fun and sun.
A Feb. 17 story in the Key West entertainment tabloid Paradise reported upcoming auditions for a theater production made up of five short, one-act plays.
The piece said the "moving theater" shows directed by Ciara Carinci of Gulfport, Fla., would be performed April 29 through May 1, outdoors at the Key West Botanical Garden. Rehearsals would begin March 4.
Funniest thing: I just happened to have my acting head shot — my tuxedo photo from being the only staff film critic in the 150-plus-year history of the Muskegon Chronicle — and resume with me.
Who'd a thunk it, except for everyone who knows me.
Doesn't take much to kick an ego into gear.
Five days after seeing the story, I — dressed in a navy blazer, cream-colored sportshirt and khaki slacks — showed up for 10 a.m. tryouts at the Tropic Cinema art/independent movie theater.
When I introduced myself to Carinci and producer Jonathan Shorck, the first thing Carinci said was, "You have a great voice."
After which Shorck asked, "Have you done much theater?"
Ask an actor a question and he'll recite his credits.
I slammed my ego into reverse and launched back to the beginning of my stage odyssey in the late 1970s.Enjoy Cheap nike air max for women or men at wholesale price.
My reminiscence captivated all within earshot for roughly the span of a blink.Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility.
Funniest thing: Even when someone's eyes are behind sunglasses, you can sense those peepers glassing over in disinterest. Did you know that people can yawn without opening their mouths?
Into a vacant auditorium we went.
There I read cold — meaning straight from the scripts — from two plays, opposite a Key West actress named Connie.
In one playlet I was a son who'd just killed his wife, and Connie was his mother who thinks he should have married his sister and sees no reason why anybody would think that's incest.
In the other, I read the role of a homeless guy who begs small change from a passerby, and Connie was the passerby on whom my character would soon turn the proverbial tables.
That was it: Connie and me. No one else showed up.
Carinci said she'd call Connie, and asked me if I could come back the next night,Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we. to read opposite some other folks.
We definitely can use you, she said.
So there I was the following day at 9:30 p.m.
Again, only one other auditionee showed up.
The production requires eight performers.
This, I thought, was not promising.
Outside the auditorium before the audition, Carinci and Shorck chatted with George Cooper, chairman of the Tropic's board.
We had to wait for a screening of the major downer "Rabbit Hole," starring Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman, to run its credits.
After it did, out walked Cooper's wife, novelist Judy Blume.
That, to put things mildly, got my attention.
Funniest thing: Before the second audition began, Carinci said I was in and "I'll let you know."
That is about the worst thing an auditioning actor can hear besides "Thank you."
The latter almost always means "Don't call us, we'll call you," "Kiss off," that sort of thing.
But Carinci again said, "You have a great voice."
She added, "You have a great presence."
And now she's let me know.
A couple days later, Carinci e-mailed to tell me that additional auditions would be held May 4, and that I was free to return to Michigan until plans were firmer.
Back I came.lacoste shoes are considered a glorious beacon of intelligent design.
A few days ago, Carinci let me know.
The show, she said, is half-cast, and one of the performers is her.
If the production proceeds, rehearsals will begin April 25, in preparation for a May 6 opening.
Actors will be sent the scripts in advance, Carinci said.
By the time rehearsals begin, we will be expected to be off-book, meaning we must have the texts memorized before we go to work.
It's the same way, in West Michigan, we do summer stock at Howmet Playhouse in Whitehall.
Funniest thing: During my stay in Key West, I filed several Extra Iddings blogs that ended with, "To be continued ... "
Plans seem to be going ahead for my first acting gig in Key West.
But in the theater you never know.
That's one thing that makes it the most fun you can have with your pants on.
To be continued ... ?

Is Less Really More In Running Shoes?
New Canaan runners who want to simulate barefoot running are flocking to try out the new minimalist shoes being offered by New Balance, Nike, Saucony, and Vibram. The shoes are light, bright, and give new meaning to the term, "where the rubber meets the road."
"It feels like you're running barefoot," said Mike Shinsky,we've already seen three classic Air max classic models in their flagship colorways release. general manager of New Balance of New Canaan. "Our shoes are less than 8 ounces and force you to run on the balls of your feet,Nike air max tn is commonly known as Air Max Plus. which is the natural way to run."
At first glance, it looks impossible to run in Vibram's "FiveFingers," the trend-setter of minimalist shoes. Think of a glove for your foot. Think of shoes E.T. might have worn. The "FiveFingers" has slots for every toe, which makes getting into the shoe an experience in and of itself. The first time you try them on, allow a good 15 minutes to get your feet comfortably in — seriously. (See video at right.) They weigh 5.7 ounces and appear to be more about style than substance.
"We get the customer that comes in and says, 'Hey, these are cool and different,' and they walk out with them," Carlos Martinez, manager of the Athletic Shoe Factory said. "There is definitely a novelty to them. Can't find a particular pair of ed hardy jeans on our website?"
But there is not much cushion in them. No gels, no foams, and apparently nothing that provides a lot of comfort for a runner.
"This is basically a flat shoe," said Shinsky, whose company New Balance,More information about nike air max 97 shoes including release dates and prices. is set to launch "Minimus", its entry into the minimalist market, on March 1. "This shoe will force you to run the proper way and decrease the pounding that one normally takes from the heel-strike."
The minimalist shoes, which run from $75 to $125, favor technique over technology. Proper form is a must, and you must crawl in them before you can run.
"You have to ease your way into these shoes. You should walk around in them for a while," Martinez said. "People that try to go out and run five miles right away are going to hurt themselves."
Those sentiments were echoed by Dr. George McGinniss, orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine in New Canaan.
"They are a great shoe as an aid for conditioning," McGinniss said. "But they should be used by the right person in the right condition."
According to McGinness, there are three types of conditioning: anaerobic, strength, and soft-tissue conditioning.
"These shoes aren't for the 45-year old runner who has a mortgage, three kids, and runs on the weekends," McGinniss added. "Runners have to ease into these shoes and build up the soft-tissue in their feet. This is the new nike air max 90 in Pecan, Black and Varsity Royal."
Time will tell if minimalist shoes are a fad or here to stay. But in this day and age, where different is good, these shoes definitely stand out.

Out of the closet
A PIECE of advice from Filipino-American model Ian Batherson: “You don't need to spend a lot to look good.”
Ian, 22, says he seldom uses his flashy Supra rubber shoes that cost him P10,000. He also thinks his P60,000 TechnoMarine watch is “terribly overpriced.”
“Always be practical,” says Ian, last seen in the reality show “Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Showdown” on GMA 7.
Ian was born in Germany to an American father and a Filipino mother. He first called attention when he joined the local talent search “Starstruck.” He will soon be in the cast of the teleserye “Sisid.”
“Clothes don't make the man,” he tells Living Stars. “Just stick to those that complement your body structure.”
Footwear
I no longer wear the Supras in my collection because my style has changed. I just like my shoes plain now.
I also have Skytops—in different colors. They are super expensive; I kind of regret having bought them. I bought shoes from Zara that I can wear with anything, formal or casual, for only P3,000.
Tops
I wear a lot of Top Man, People Are People and Zara, sometimes Paul Smith. I like plain long-sleeved shirts. I also like blazers and simple, European designs. I like them in gray, dark green, dark brown.
I always seek the help of store personnel. I buy so much from Top Man that I've been given a celebrity discount.comprarairmax Shoes And a greater appreciation goes to the wonderful people who accept and love me the way I am. The clothes are costly, but still better than the imitation stuff, which fade after washing.
Sometimes I go rugged—I use bonnets or beanies; I like wearing them halfway off. I'm also into leather jackets.
Bottoms
I have a few pairs of Top Man cutoffs that I wear with plaid shirts. I also like Penshoppe jeans. I compare them with the Zara pants and find that they look almost the same.
Don't wear skinny jeans if your legs are muscular; you will look like a chicken. I used to wear super baggy pants. We provide cheap Nike shox classic 2 shoes with all colors. I am embarrassed to think about that now.
Scents
Burberry Sport came out just a few months ago. It's a little spicy but also citrus-y. I like it, fresh and not too strong. I hate the scent of musk.It would be against my gentedefecoogijeans.
Before I turned 18, I wasn't interested in scents. The first bottle of cologne I bought for myself was Lacoste Essentials. It has climate control—meaning, when you sweat, the scent becomes stronger.
I wear Bulgari Extreme to go out to lunch, maybe to meet a friend. I'm also a sucker for cool bottle designs.
Kenzo Power for Men also works for women. It has a powdery, floral scent, like you just stepped out of the shower.
This is my favorite formal-events cologne—Gucci by Gucci. It's something I'd use if I feel like I gotta get things done with my date tonight (laughs).
Aqua di Gio is very popular. It smells fresh and ocean-y. I think girls dig this.
I know quite a few people who use Bulgari Aquamarine. It's breezy. I also like the bottle. I like the clean, man-on-the-move types.
Eyewear
Almost everyone has these, imitation or original: Ray-Ban Wayfarers. I bought mine in the States. It has a bigger frame than those sold in Asia. My Aviators have gradient lenses; I can wear them indoors.
My favorite is this Bulgari. It has a nice, clean look. Nice din ang price.
I call these my X-Men Cyclops shades. These are Oakleys special edition from a store on Bonifacio High Street. I did an event there, and after I got paid, I went straight to the store. I'm so bad.
Timepieces
I have a TechnoMarine that can go 660 feet underwater. It's Swiss-made, really expensive at P79,000. But I bought it on sale.
