In My Shoes Event a Success

Having talked several times with Alexia Brooks (senior, English) about her brainchild event, In My Shoes,There are just so many styles of real and fake dsquared shoes out there that it is near impossible to cover all of them. I still had little idea of what to expect.

The event, which took place on April 25th, is based on Challenge Day, a program that Brooks participated in at Beyer High School. According to its website, Challenge Day helps "tear down the walls of separation" through "highly interactive and energetic activities."

"Students are going to have open dialogue about different issues they've seen or been victim to because of stereotypes that we attach to certain things, like being gay or being a Republican or being Muslim or things like that," Brooks said. "It gives students an opportunity to let other students know what it would be like to be in their shoes."

Challenge Day has lately been getting more publicity, mostly due to MTV's "If You Really Knew Me," a reality show that began airing last year. Each episode follows a single high school Challenge Day.

Though it did not feature a camera crew or energetic activities, In My Shoes was a well-attended and very interactive event.

Brooks ran the event alongside Gaby Farias (sophomore, English, although she is planning to switch to Gender Studies next fall), the University Student Union social awareness coordinator.

"I get nervous about the little things," Brooks said prior to the event. Despite her anxiety, the event went off without a hitch.
