The 2011 girl's Goodrich softball season was one of abnormality and resilience. Not only was the pitching mound moved back 3 feet this year, leading to an increase in runs, but the girls from Goodrich had to endure through a season that involved 12 games cancelled do to inclement weather.
The transition from moving the mound back had a major impact on the games according to Goodrich softball coach Bob Morgan. “They moved the mound back three feet so it felt like we had to score more runs this year. There were some good pitchers, but it was a benefit to the hitters.”
The girls this year also had some big shoes to fill from last year's season. One major role to fill was Emily England who was a three year catcher. The daunting role of catching for Goodrich fell into the hands of freshman Lindsay Stambaugh.
Although this is was a large role to fill, Coach Morgan had only good things to say about his freshman catcher. “Stambaugh did a phenomenal job behind the plate. She caught every inning of every game but one. She was great for us.”
Another great player that had to be replaced was someone you might remember from past years. Her name is Casey Baker. Baker was a star second baseman and a unanimous All-Genesee Area Conference pick.
Regardless of the shoes being filled, this year's softball team had much to celebrate. You could say this year's team was known as a comeback team.
The girls had many come-from-behind wins this season including big wins against Montrose and Lake Fenton. In a night cap game against Montrose, Goodrich trailed by two. Facing the possibility of losing their chance at the league title, the girls rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to score three runs to win the game 6-5.
Goodrich played for the share of the Division Championship with Lakeville on Tuesday, May 31 against Lake Fenton. The girls had to come out and win both games of a double header in order to keep their league title hopes alive. After the Martians were able to squeak out a 3-2 victory in the first game, the table was set for a great night cap.
The second game would call on the girls for another miraculous comeback. Goodrich trailed Lake Fenton 7-3 heading into the fifth inning.
The Martians answered with two runs in the fifth and a huge hit by Tori Jones in the sixth inning provided an 8-7 victory for Goodrich and a share of the GAC Red Division.
Goodrich went on to play Lakeville in a district match-up on June 4. Once again the girls from Goodrich proved their resilience as they were able to come back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Coach Morgan was very pleased with his team this season. “The girls had the will to want to win. The hitting this year was led by first basemen Tori Jones who ended the season hitting .452 all while driving in a whopping 41 runners.
Carley Jensen knocked in 28 runners while leading the team in batting average with .545. Meghan Tangney owned the mound this year pitching 122 1/3 innings with a record of 13-6. Kelsey Collins was able to help out at the mound pitching 42 2/3 innings finishing with 31 strikeouts.
The girls ended the season with an overall record of 19-11 and share of the league title with a record of 11-1. As a team, they batted .380 with 248 hits, 11 homeruns and 212 runs scored.
Although Goodrich fell short in the district tournament, Coach Morgan was more than happy with his team.
