Orioles Notebook: Hardy settles into leadoff spot

Until Matt Wieters excused himself through a throng of reporters to whisper something in J.J. Hardy's ear, the Orioles' shortstop had no idea he was about to experience a career first.

Playing his 704th major league game Tuesday, Hardy started at leadoff for the first time in his seven-year career. The winner will receive a Nike Jacket.Clothing designer Erin Fetherston stood nearby wearing a green-and-black ensemble from her spring collection above a pair of christian louboutin platform pumps.

Hardy's reaction when Wieters leaned over and gave him the news?

"What?" Hardy said with a surprised, amused grin. "We just had a conversation in the bathroom which I said, ‘Where we hitting?' He said six, seven, and I go, ‘All right.' We've been there quite a bit this year and then he came up here right now and told me first."

Hardy's ability to get on base in multiple ways would make him seem like a solid option to bat first. But he lacks a speed element to his game, which most leadoff hitters possess.

Hardy has batted most often at second in the order in his career, but has been used at the bottom of the Orioles' lineup, anywhere from sixth to ninth, in all but three games this year.

Baltimore manager Buck Showalter has been using Robert Andino and Felix Pie atop the order in Brian Roberts' absence. But with Luke Scott in left field and Ryan Adams at second base, neither Andino nor Pie were in the lineup Tuesday,You can find out history about Air max 360 as well as release dates at Nice Kicks. and Showalter said Hardy was elevated to that spot out of necessity.

"We have kind of pieced that spot together until we get Brian back. And that's probably the least disruptive to the rest of the group," Showalter said of Hardy. "And he is swinging the bat well. We don't have really a conventional guy."

Hardy entered Tuesday batting .275 with four homers and 16 RBIs in 31 games. He's on pace to set a career high with a .350 on-base percentage.

Hardy said his approach won't change except for the first at-bat. Asked whether that means he'll be more patient, he replied, "I don't know. Maybe I'll go out there and swing at the fist pitch."

He didn't. He swung at the second pitch and hit it out of the park for a leadoff homer in his first leadoff at-bat.

DUKE DOWN: What was supposed to be injured right-hander Justin Duchscherer's next step toward joining the Orioles resulted in another setback.

Duchscherer (strained left hip) was scheduled to pitch five innings in an extended spring game Tuesday, but Showalter said he believes the starter only lasted three frames because of discomfort in his hip.

Baltimore took a chance on Duchscherer over the winter on a one-year deal with a low base salary. But it's starting to look more and more like he won't be able to pitch for the Orioles.

"I think he has had so many challenges with it since the start of spring, that if it happens it's a real [bonus]," Showalter said. "It's something we are not counting on. We are not counting on it. If it happens, it's a real boost. If it doesn't, then we have certainly given it every chancLooking for Juicy couture wholesale?e possible."

DRAFT CONTINUES: The Orioles continued to stockpile picks on the second day of the first-year player draft Tuesday, less than 24 hours after selecting prep pitcher Dylan Bundy fourth overall.

Baltimore took Vanderbilt third baseman Jason Esposito in the second round, East Carolina right-hander Mike Wright in the third and Arizona right-hander Kyle Simon in the fourth round.

Esposito has batted .362 with eight homers, 22 doubles and 55 RBIs in 60 games with Vanderbilt, which has advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.

"He certainly looks the part. Big strong kid," Showalter said of Esposito. "I know going into the draft before the year started he was talked kind of along with [Anthony Rendon] as one of the better college [third basemen].Of course, the suit jacket was adorned with a silken floral design on the sleeves and front, and some sort of sparkly cheap christan audigier skull/cross/flowers design on the back."

The Orioles took Arizona State outfielder Johnny Ruettiger with 245th overall pick and John Carroll School third baseman Kevin Hockaday with the 425th pick. Ruettiger is the nephew of famed former Notre Dame football player Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger.

The draft will be completed today.
