"The emptiness," Erik Spoelstra said after meeting with his players for the final time this season, "is still there. We can't deny that."
For the Miami Heat coach and his players, Tuesday still found them at a loss, as they cleaned out lockers and desks in the wake of Sunday's season-ending Game 6 loss in the NBA Finals to the Dallas Mavericks.
"It's unavoidable right now to feel the pain and the emptiness," Spoelstra said during his final media session of the season. "But it really is only a failure if you have an inability to rise and get up."
One by one, Spoelstra's team leaders then addressed how they would build from this moment, make sure it becomes a steppingstone to the ultimate reward that proved elusive these past two weeks.
"As individuals," LeBron James said, "we feel like we failed, because we're competitors and we wanted to win an NBA championship. But we did some great things in our first year and this is a building block on next year."
"Obviously," Dwyane Wade said, "you're in a stage of depression, over losing. You don't get over it; you're not going to get over it for a while. You play things over and over in your mind. But there's days when you start to get back to reality, a little bit of life. My kids, they aren't going to let me stay in the room too long, eventually they're going to come knocking on the door. . .. I got to be Daddy again. But obviously there's a lot of thinking."
"We didn't accomplish our goal," forward Chris Bosh said, "but we can use that as fuel moving on. It's the most memories I've ever had from one basketball season."
Even as he turned his attention to next Thursday's draft, with the Heat hosting prospects Wednesday at AmericanAirlines Arena, Spoelstra said the moment is still too raw to assess personnel moving forward. But he said the expectation is to move forward with the same core.
"We don't want to make any knee-jerk evaluations right now or corrections at this point," he said. "All of us need a little bit of time to decompress. I'll go through all the evaluations of our team and coaching decisions and things we can do better philosophically. That time will come. That time isn't right now."
Spoelstra said he plans to bring his entire staff back next season, but declined to discuss his own status, as he heads into the final year of his contract.
"I don't think that's a major concern right now," he said.
While Heat President Pat Riley has yet to publicly discuss his plans moving forward, Spoelstra said there have been daily conversations with Riley.
"Right after the game," Spoelstra said, "I was walking mindlessly down the hall.Nike shox R4 shoes are very popular and hotsale in our store. You're not expecting it at that point and you're not thinking about anything. And the first person I saw when I opened up my office, it surprised me,Fashion wash urban wholesale jeans styles in a great variety of colors and style! You can find out history about Air max 360 as well as release dates at Nice Kicks. he was in there."
Spoelstra said the two also met for "two or three hours" on Monday, with each session beginning with the two silent, in reflection over what has just transpired.
"The one thing we can always guarantee," Spoelstra said, "we will do absolutely everything we think is necessary to put ourselves in a position to compete for it again. And there won't be too long of a period where we feel sorry for ourselves.
"We'll get back to work and lace up the shoes and figure it out. That's what this process is right now for us as we're trying to deal with this."
Considering all the team has been through these past nine months, dating to training camp, Spoelstra said it has been nothing short of a whirlwind.
"I told our team this, 'There was really no way to prepare for a season like this,If you are looking wear to buy sexy Knee High Boots the you have arrive.' " he said. "And Pat even mentioned that to the group, in fifty-some years that he's been around the NBA, he's never been around a team that was such a lightning rod for positive or negative opinions. And it was a growing experience.
"I tell you what,Word of mouth, better known as street credibility is a vital part of the Chivas Air max 2009 athletic shoe phenomenon. I think it was terrific for all of us to go through it. You learn a lot about yourself. You learn a lot about your fellow brother, your teammate, your other coaches. You learn about how we all deal with adversity, with things we cannot control, and it makes you tougher."
And then it's over.
"We've come a long way as a group," Spoelstra said. "I think, ultimately, we learned a lot about each other."
