NEW YORK Shoe designer Alejandro Ingelmo knows this: Too many people don't know how to find comfort, fashion and function in one pair of shoes, and style is often the first to be sacrificed.
It's supposed to be the season of more wedges and fewer flip-flops, according to the "experts," but Ingelmo recently spent a morning in Midtown Manhattan on a reality-check mission to see what everyday folk are wearing. And what he found was too many toning shoes and not enough slingbacks.
"I do notice shoes all the time. Sometimes there's so much bad stuff, it's just too much information," Ingelmo says. "Sometimes I can't look."
But Ingelmo, maker of elegant, sophisticated styles, isn't a shoe snob, either. High-tops with skinny jeans ooze cool, he says, and there's a time and place for other sneakers (he wears his New Balances on the weekends), hiking shoes and thong sandals. However, he draws the line at the shoes with the rounded sole that promises to shape legs while you walk. It alters posture in a way he finds unflattering, he says. Plus, they're clunky.
The prettiest shoes on women typically have a little heel, although gladiator sandals, in particular, at any height create the illusion of a long, lean line with their straps, he says.authentic gucci shoes will have this number hidden on the inside of the shoe. The same goes for slingbacks.
