Blue Devils open season by marching over Saints

Despite considerable graduation losses, the Duke men's lacrosse team appeared comfortable from the start Saturday as it tries to win another NCAA championship.

The Blue Devils began their season-opening game against Siena with a flourish, scoring five goals in the first eight minutes, and routed the Saints 20-6 in a nonconference game at Koskinen Stadium.

Duke junior CJ Costabile, who scored the championship-clinching goal in overtime when the Blue Devils beat Notre Dame in May for their first national championship, said his memories remain great. But Saturday was a day to move on to what's next.

"The biggest thing about it is it's different," Costabile said. "That team is gone. The man who helped Jordan win jordan 6 rings as a player wants to be a coach, and though inexperienced, It's done.Sarah emerged from Juicy couture wholesale with three bags full of clothes. This is the final day, where the next chapter begins.

"We started off really, really well. A lot of the young guys came out playing right off the bat."

Ranked No. 5 in both the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and Inside Lacrosse magazine national polls, the Blue Devils (1-0) will rely on newcomers this season. Duke returns six starters but must replace two of the top scorers in school history who graduated in 2010.

Ned Crotty finished No. 4 on the team's all-time scoring list, winning the Tewaaraton Trophy as national player of the year in 2010. He also won the ACC male athlete of the year award, which covers all sports.

Max Quinzani left Duke No. 5 on the all-time scoring list.

Senior attacker Zach Howell stepped in nicely on Saturday, scoring a career-best seven goals while also tallying two assists for nine total points (also a career best).

"If we're playing the way we'd like to play -- athletically and up and down and fast breaking and taking advantage of opponent's mistakes-- the attackmen, by nature of the position, are going to get a lot of points, " Duke coach John Danowski said. "As simple as that sounds and as basic as that sounds, that's really it."

Howell assisted on the season's first goal with a pass to Josh Offit, who scored with 12:06 left in the first quarter. Six different Duke players scored in the first quarter on the way to a 6-1 lead.

On the day, 11 Blue Devils had goals with 15 players tallying at least one point.

Two newcomers, freshmen Christian Walsh and redshirt senior Jesse Fehr, had their first Duke goals in the first quarter. Fehr joins the Blue Devils after transferring from Harvard and sitting out the 2010 season because of an injury. He may also be wearing black Nike shox runners.

Freshman Jordan Wolf logged his first Duke assist on the Blue Devils' fourth goal of the first period. There's a reason Manolo blahnik shoes are considered the crème de al crème of all shoes, everywhere.

"For the most part, everybody played right," Danowski said. "Our passing was crisp. We were in the right spots on the field. ... There were a lot of firsts for a lot of people."

Duke goalkeeper Dan Wigrizer, a sophomore who started 16 of Duke's 19 games a year ago, played only the first half of the lopsided game and registered seven saves.

The Blue Devils didn't have a big championship look back or anything on the first day of the new season. They received their championship rings on Nov. 13 and were honored that day during a ceremony at halftime of the Duke-Boston College football game at Wallace Wade Stadium.

"That was kind of the last real who-rah about it,One of those shoes is without a doubt the Nike air max tn and we are going to be looking at the latest colorway today." Costabile said. "It was really cool to see everyone again, but you've got to put that in the past."

The Devils started that process on Saturday with a performance that pleased their coach.

"Two things we wanted to was get after ground balls and exchange the ball well, just clear well and possessing on offense," Danowski said. "If we can do those two things, I thought we could be successful. I'm certainly delighted with the effort."
