Hants County leading the way in junior high rugby

When Rick Kitchin sees a gym full of junior high students eager to learn the ins and outs of rugby, he can't help but think big.

"In 2016, rugby 7's will become an official Olympic sport and the next wave of rugby talent will be coming from this age group," Kitchin said.

Kitchin,Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we. a member of Rugby Nova Scotia's board of directors, hails from Hillsvale. He has been travelling throughout the province teaching middle-school students the basics of his favourite sport, and helping schools get junior high rugby teams going, for the last five years.

"The ultimate goal of this is to have one of these kids represent Canada in the Olympics," he said. "You never know."

The junior high co-ed flag rugby program started at the West Hants Middle School,Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility. and grew from there.

"We were the first in the province… but we really had no one to play against,I'm a small investor in a startup company deploying a podiatrist-patented method for adding comfort to high-fashion, high-heel shoes for women." said Kitchin.Find a fashionable range of women boots and ladies shoes all in one place online.

Windsor's King's-Edgehill School promptly followed suit and offered the WHMS players some outside competition. Then,Buy Knee High Boots with a price guarantee and top rated customer service. Hantsport got in on the action. Now, youths from Mount Uniacke, the HRM, Truro and Pictou are getting a taste of flag rugby.

"It's all swelled from Hants County, so this is one thing that has just kind of taken off from our area," Kitchin said.

"The future (of rugby) relies on these kids. It's kind of neat that Hants County is the seed of all this."

On March 23, Kitchin stood in the gym at the Uniacke District School and told the students who showed up for rugby lessons they could be standing next to a future Olympian.

"The school has never had a team before but there's always been kids asking for it," he said.

Working with James Hardy, president of the Windsor Hants County Rugby Football Club (aka the Machine), Kitchin taught a group of about 20 enthusiastic first timers the basics of flag rugby.

"There is a lot of fitness in the game… especially at the flag level, because there is no contact. It's just running and catching, running and catching. And, these kids just burn off a ton of energy."

All of the junior high rugby players in the province will be meeting at the West Hants Middle School May 29 for an entire day devoted to the sport that, Kitchin says, is about more than burly bruisers rolling around a field scrapping.

"The neat thing about rugby is it always seems to draw that odd kid that never really took part in other sports," he said.

"Rugby's got that old reputation of a bunch… of fighters and scrappers and it hasn't been like that for a number of years. We're trying to get rid of that reputation."

Hornets beat Blazers 95-91

Carl Landry joined the Hornets with the goal of being a rugged role player.

Thrust into the starting lineup because of David West's season-ending injury last week, he's quickly transformed himself into a top scoring starter.

Landry tallied 21 points, Willie Green highlighted a 10-point fourth-quarter outburst with an energizing one-handed jam, and New Orleans jumped ahead of Portland for sixth place in the Western Conference with a 95-91 victory over the Trail Blazers on Wednesday night.

"We made some money off of Carl tonight for sure,I'm a small investor in a startup company deploying a podiatrist-patented method for adding comfort to high-fashion, high-heel shoes for women. going to him down the stretch," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "Willie was phenomenal, the dunk he had. ... If we can finish like this the rest of the year, I'll be pleased."

Chris Paul had 11 points and 12 assists, and Emeka Okafor had 15 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 1:38 left.

Marco Belinelli hit four of five 3-point attempts and finished with 16 points for the Hornets, who have won three of four, the lone loss coming on the road against the surging Los Angeles Lakers. Green finished with 12 points.

Williams, meanwhile, was animated on the sideline, knowing that a third win in four meetings with the team for which he used to serve as an assistant would give the Hornets an important tiebreaker in the standings. He coached as if it were the playoffs, keeeping starters on the court as long as needed to stay close in a game Portland led most of the way.

Paul played 45:11, his second most minutes in regulation this season.

"We showed a lot of grit," Paul said.Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility. "I think we showed coach's personality tonight. Coach is over there fighting for us, screaming. Coach is one of those guys that would put on a jersey if he could. For us to go out there and get this win tonight, knowing that that was his old home, it was a special win for us."

LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points and 15 rebounds for Portland (43-32), which is tied with New Orleans in terms of wins and losses, but has lost the season tiebreaker.

Andre Miller added 19 points for Portland, but committed a costly turnover while driving to the hoop with the Blazers trailing 91-88 and 13 seconds left. Landry came up with the ball, was fouled and made both free throws, then added two more foul shots to seal it.

Miller's turnover was Portland's ninth of the second half.

"It was turnovers. They were huge," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "You can't have those mistakes going down the stretch."

Gerald Wallace had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers, while Patrick Mills added 13 points, hitting all three attempts from long range.

"This one hurts, especially a game that we feel like we controlled for the first quarter-and-a-half," Wallace said. "In the second half, they kind of took control and forced us to play back on our heels."

After trailing much of the game, but still as close as 70-68 after three quarters, the Hornets surged ahead in the final period thanks in large part to Green's 10-point scoring surge during a 16-4 run.

Green's highlights included a 3, a tough running floater as he swept across the lane and a soaring one-handed jam on a putback of Jarrett Jack's missed jumper - the last play sending the crowd into a frenzy.

"It was good to get up there and dunk.Offers women's sexy high heels including boots, mules, platform shoes, pumps and sandals. I'm going to laugh and talk with my teammates about it," Green said. "They were a little caught off guard. I was a little caught off guard. I don't dunk that much."

Jack then made a jumper that gave the Hornets their largest lead at 84-75.

Portland didn't fold, though, and tensions rose soon after when Jack and Rudy Fernandez got into a brief tussle for which they each received technical fouls with a little under 5 minutes remaining.

The Trail Blazers trimmed their deficit to five before Paul put New Orleans back up 90-83 with a driving floater off the glass with 1:40 left.

Wallace then drew Okafor's sixth foul and hit both free throws, and Miller added a driving layup to make it 90-87, setting up a tense final minute.

The Hornets improved to 2-1 since West tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.Buy Knee High Boots with a price guarantee and top rated customer service. Landry has averaged 21.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in those three games.

"Those are some big shoes to fill and we got to just do it collectively," Landry said of West's absence. "Right now, I'm just doing what I can do. Hopefully it'll be better than what it is now. ... We've got keep helping one another because we're not in the playoffs yet."

No, but they're closing in. Ninth-place Houston, which lost to Philadelphia Wednesday, fell four games behind both New Orleans and Portland, with all three teams having only seven games left.

Coach Simpson concludes 38-year stint at Dover Bay

There are some big shoes to fill in the Dover Bay basketball program next year as long-time coach Mark Simpson steps down after his 38th season of championship level ball.Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility.

Simpson said he has passed the torch to Chris Franklin to head the Dolphins AAA senior boy's team next season.

Over his lengthy career Simpson has developed relationships with his players that have lasted far longer than the time they spent on his bench and the hardcourt. With another year left to teach high school, Simpson declined to comment on his future in the sport.

He is not one to clamor for media attention, said Ken Shields, a sports legend who has consulted for NBA teams, won numerous university championships and holds the Order of Canada.

"I think one of Mark's biggest characteristics is humility. He's never seeking the limelight but he's always in the background, a steady hard-working,I wanted to shop for running asics shoes. knowledgeable guy."

Vancouver Island University Mariners coach Tony Bryce acknowledged Simpson for his contribution to Nanaimo sport and said that without his support, Bryce would never have made it to where he is now. Bryce went through Simpson's high school and university program at VIU when it was Malaspina University.

"He's taught me so much more than just the game of basketball," Bryce explained. "I don't know if I'd be a high school teacher without him. I know for a fact I wouldn't be a college coach without him, he has that kind of an impact on you."

Mike Morgan also played under Simpson in 1995 and echoed Bryce's sentiments. He's now a coach at Carson Graham Secondary School for the boys' AAA basketball team thanks to Simpson's motivation and inspiration.

Morgan's team beat the Dover Bay Dolphins for the first time since he took over as coach five years ago.

"There's a lot of his former players probably coaching some place, or involved in the game and that's part of what a good coach's legacy is, his impact in the community and his impact on the people that came under his tutelage," Shields added.

Franklin said that while it's a loss for Dover Bay, he expects Simpson to pop up somewhere and continue his involvement in the game. As for his new duties, Franklin said he has his work cut out for him.

Bill Neukom,a giant among Giants

I wanted to shop for running asics shoes.

Two days after he became managing general partner of the Giants, Bill Neukom left his San Francisco hotel in search of the perfect latte. He needed something strong enough to help him reanimate a team that had just finished the 2008 season 72-90,Find a fashionable range of women boots and ladies shoes all in one place online. next-to-last in the National League West.

Neukom has favored bow ties since he attended San Mateo High School, and at 69, he has a pile of white hair that rises above his head like freshly steamed foam -- making him easily recognizable. But on that October morning, he passed through the crowded streets unnoticed, a virtual unknown in the city whose baseball fortunes he would now guide.

He had once been lawyer to the richest man in the world, presiding over a legal team that for five years fought the United States government as an equal. In the process, Neukom helped earn for Microsoft -- the company he represented for more than two decades -- a reputation as the tech world's Evil Empire. But as a newly minted baseball executive, he assumed he wore a cloak of anonymity.

As Neukom turned up Grant Avenue, he noticed an approaching figure. "He's shuffling along, plainly a homeless person," Neukom says. "He had a lot of scraggly hair under a baseball cap and a plastic bag over his shoulder. As I get closer, I identify an A's logo on his hat."

The two men -- headed in very different directions -- made eye contact.More information about nike air max 97 shoes including release dates and prices. "And just as I'm passing him," Neukom recalls, "he says, 'Good luck with the Giants, kid.' "

Just two seasons later, an exultant -- and no longer anonymous -- Neukom was accepting the World Series trophy from baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, following the Giants' improbable championship run that ended with a beat-down of the Texas Rangers. He had been a fan of the team for 50 years by the time he gained control of it -- at Stanford Law School, Neukom listened to games on a transistor radio -- and he became so consumed with winning during the playoffs he picked the socks he wore based purely on clubhouse superstition.

"I didn't bring an orange bow tie to Texas for fear it might jinx us," he says. Neukom's wife, Sally, bought one after the Giants won Game 4 and he wore it for the trophy presentation the next night. When he ran into pitcher Tim Lincecum later in the locker room,Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we. the team's principal owner -- who has four grown children of his own from an earlier marriage -- felt the tie in his jacket pocket and handed it to his star player.

Lincecum, whose long hair is in keeping with a "hippie" upbringing, asked Neukom earlier in the season to teach him how to tie a bow tie. Now the two-time National League MVP became a little boy again, examining the bow tie with wonder. "He looked at it and said, 'Is that for me?' " Neukom remembers. "That was a sweet moment."

Organizational clarity

Since their last World Series appearance in 2002, the Giants sometimes found themselves tied in knots as an organization under managing partner Peter Magowan, who ran the team for 16 years. Neukom, who began buying blocks of the team's stock in 1995 with the millions he earned as Microsoft's general counsel, was determined to bring the same organizational clarity to baseball he had imposed while building a high-tech legal department of more than 650 people.

"Bill believes in process," says Giants general manager Brian Sabean. "You don't have much second-guessing in an organization if everybody's in on the first guess." Still, Neukom loves drilling into details, like swapping information with scouts about players throughout the team's far-flung farm system. "You can ask him about any of these minor league kids," says manager Bruce Bochy, "and he'll tell you all about them."

At the team's spring training camp in Arizona, Neukom frequently was greeted like a rock star by fans as he made his way through the stands. During batting practice before one game, Steve Wong, of San Jose, asked Neukom to sign a baseball, then circled around and joined another crowd of autograph-seekers to get Neukom's signature on a second ball. And when the defending champs play their season-opener Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Neukom will remain the big difference in the front office.

In two of the pastimes that matter most in the Bay Area -- computers and baseball -- Neukom's inability to let up, even after he has won, has led to a scorched earth record of success. As Bill Gates' hand-picked general counsel, womens sandals are not only popular today, but have been popular throughout the ages. he waged a bruising battle to prevent the government from breaking up Microsoft. Other lawyers envied his success, and friends frequently reminded him of the company's skyrocketing stock price.

"People would say, 'You must be having a ball. You've got the best law job in the world,' " he recalls. "When you're in a high-visibility, high-stress, high-stakes situation, there are parts of it that are very rewarding, but the way I'm wired it's not fun."

And the pressure has only increased now that he's the public face of another storied franchise. "It had been pretty public at Microsoft, given the litigation and the success of the company," Neukom says. "But this is of a different magnitude."

Next Profit Up 10%

Shoppers are already balking at rising high street prices and they're going to go up even further,Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we. said U.K. clothing retailer Next PLC on Thursday, but the company is still hoping to grow sales in the first half of this year and expects inflationary pressure to start to ease in 2012.

Next said full-year net profit rose 10% to $401.1 million ($657 million) from $364.1 million a year earlier, and reported a 1% rise in revenue to $3.45 billion from $3.41 billion. Pretax profit rose 9% to $551 million,Find a fashionable range of women boots and ladies shoes all in one place online. in line with market forecasts.

Clothing retailers have had to contend with cotton prices well above 15-year highs since November and wage inflation in manufacturing countries, both of which have forced prices up at a time when the U.K. consumer is already under pressure from tax rises, inflation and job uncertainty.

Next had previously flagged price increases of 8% to offset cotton price and wage inflation, and said Thursday that this price rise had dented sales by around 1.5%.

Wage inflation and cotton-price pressure is expected to get even worse through the year, with the group's Autumn-Winter collection likely to be between 8% and 10% more expensive.Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility. Chief Executive Simon Wolfson said that the company is working hard to maintain prices on its lower-priced goods through better sourcing, but ultimately the priorities are to maintain quality and margins, rather than pricing.

Gear Review: High Peak Chameleon 20/0

Nothing is worse than lying in your sleeping bag shivering all night. Except if it's laying in your sleeping bag sweating all night. It's that ongoing dilemma which causes many people to struggle with buying a sleeping bag. Even if most of your trips are in the summer or fall, you still want to be prepared for a winter night, but don't want to shell out big bucks for two bags.
High Peak saw that struggle, and the answer is the Chameleon. It's a 20 degree synthetic bag that comes with an additional blanket-like attachment that easily zips onto the top of the bag to bring the comfort rating down to zero. Brilliant. Why didn't I think of that?
I put the Chameleon to the test on a snow camping trip in the Crags, beneath Pikes Peak in Colorado this February. I knew there was no way I could be warm in a 20 degree bag while sleeping at 11,000 feet above sea level in the snow, so I zipped on the extra layer and hit the trail. We saw temps in the single digits, and I was glad to have a thick, warm bag. The chest collar snugged up tightly to prevent warm air from escaping around my neck, and the draft tube kept air from leaking through the zipper.
However, the extra insulation is only on the top of the bag, not fully wrapped around it, which caused my back to get cold when I slept on my side.Ed Hardy Women's love kills slowly Flames Highrise Shoe Black. There was quite a bit of condensation on the bag in the morning, but after laying it out in the sun the shell dried in under 30 minutes. I found the zero degree rating to be a little optimistic, but if you sleep solely on your back and can take full advantage of all the extra insulation on top you might say otherwise.
On a March snowshoeing trip to Francie's Hut (part of the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association), the extra warmth wasn't needed while staying inside the furnished hut. So before heading out I quickly unzipped the top layer and had a smaller, lighter (by a full two pounds) 20 degree bag, perfect for inside the hut. The standard mummy shape is cut extra wide at the shoulder, which gave me a lot of room to move and turn, truereligion jeans Apparel is a design-based jeans and jean-related sportswear brand. but also adds bulk.
I know some folks would rather sleep in a tight cocoon to save a few ounces,Enjoy Cheap nike air max for women or men at wholesale price. but I prefer the extra space to move and it was a nice addition. I found the hood rather shallow and not quite as “hood-like” as I prefer. Wearing a hat to bed is of course part of my winter camping routine, but a deep, thick hood goes a long way in keeping you warm. The Chameleon comes in one size,Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we. but easily fit my 6'3” body with room for socks and a jacket at the bottom.
The bag is insulated with Invista Thermolite Quallo, and like all synthetic insulators is not as compressible as a down bag. When the Chameleon is in zero degree mode, it is a fairly large package, over 18 inches long and nine inches wide. The stuff sack has nice compression straps to squeeze it down, but it still takes up a lot of room. And since there is a lot of extra material the weight tips the scales at nearly six pounds.Shop the latest marc jacobs shoes handpicked by a global community of independent trendsetters and stylists. Top quality zero degree down bags might be smaller and lighter, but also four to five times as expensive and won't convert to a three-season bag in a matter of seconds.
Overall, I was quite impressed with the Chameleon. Most people don't have a quiver of sleeping bags, but it is difficult to find one warm enough for your coldest trips but light enough for summer outings. The Chameleon has its shortcomings, but nicely works as both a 20 degree and a winter bag. At just over one hundred dollars it is far under what you'd expect to pay for most 20 degree bags, much less two separate bags, making the Chameleon a killer bargain.

Desert race truck shows a practical side

The end of the 1,500-metre snowswept runway on which I'm standing vanishes into milkbottle white, with the only contrast coming from evergreens standing guard down its entire length.

Not that long ago, massive eight-engine B-52s roared down this runway, day and night, 365 days a year. But, today, the only sound that cracks the cold is the insistent roar of a Detroit V-8. Anew engine in fact -this 6.2-litre makes 411 horsepower and 434 foot-pounds of torque and is the new standard power plant in the 2011 version of Ford's Raptor.

Having debuted just last year as a purpose-built offroad race truck, the Raptor has sold nearly 10,000 units in its first year of production - not too shabby for a limited-build SVT program. However, this year, rather than sweating in the deserts of southern California in August, I'm standing on this concrete relic of the Cold War in the most northern corner of Michigan .

Both locales present unique climate challenges, yet the snowandiceareanicechange for a Canadian boy who's regularly subjected to heat he's not used to.we've already seen three classic Air max classic models in their flagship colorways release. Still, that's where the Raptor cut its teeth just last year; it then raced Baja and won. It then headed way south -just recently, two trucks took part in the 14-day, 8,000-kilometre Dakar race through Argentina and Chile. I was the rethis year and was thrilled to see Detroit metal battling it out with the best that European and Asian engineers could field. Of the two trucks, one broke just before the finish, while the other (piloted by Sue Mead, an American racing journalist) finished 40th.Find a fashionable range of women boots and ladies shoes all in one place online.

Considering that almost half of the hand-built race vehicles never finish, that's not bad for two mostly-stock pickup trucks.

So what makes the Raptor so unique? Isn't it just another decal package?

Hardly.

First off, the Ford SVT engineers partnered with an outfit called Fox Shox, which builds one of the premier off-road multi-stage shock absorbers around.

Secondly, this tight group of Ford engineers is responsible for a host of specially built trucks going back to 1991, best known for building the Lightning pickups, which were tire-smoking ground pounders (offered first in 1993 and 1999). I first drove one in 2003 at Mosport International Raceway called the Sonic. Anyone familiar with the fourkilometre Grand Prix-style track knows of its challenging turns; not the place for a straight-line runner.

But that Lightning I drove cornered aggressively and handled off-camber turns at sports car speeds - a direct result of SVT attention to suspension, as well as good choices for rims and rubber.

And suspension is what the Raptor is all about. Consider that the truck, though based on the F-150, is 178 millimetres wider than a stock truck primarily to support the specially built underside components. These include custom cast control arms, struts, shocks, springs, prop shafts, trac bars and underarmour. That's what made up the first Raptor (available only as a SuperCab).

These past efforts and modification knowledge by the SVT guys (plus the imagination) built this first-ever factory-designed desert racer. But unlike real hand-built racers, this creation -even with its high-performance off-road capability - is still street legal and decent to drive on pavement.

That was the real surprise with the first Raptor - it did not punish you on-road for its off-road ability.

In the Sault, I had a chance to run at speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour on decommissioned logging roads -that's anice way of saying unmaintained, rutted, washed-out crap. The truck floats over this stuff. The suspension is beating like a rabbit's heart as I powerslide through icy curves, but I'm sitting still fixing my level stare on the road, feeling the surface through the steering wheel, not the cab.

Perhaps that's why this truck drives smaller than it is - in part because of the wellcalibrated steering and excellent weight transfer. Throw it as hard as you want into turns and it does not lean,Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we. doesn't lift a wheel and certainly never feels out of control. The tires bite,I'm a small investor in a startup company deploying a podiatrist-patented method for adding comfort to high-fashion, high-heel shoes for women.the brakes clamp like iron and the fourwheel-drive system offers not only 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo but an electronic rear locker as well. Also, roll stability control is incorporatedintothetraction control system, which can be left full on (nanny mode), partially turned off (called Sport - or as I say Fun -mode) and totally off (known as sphincter-scrunching mode).

After wiping out 50 metres of snowbank, I recommend Sport.

The Raptor is back for 2011. And, after much feedback from customers it is now also available as a fourdoor SuperCrew truck. Now, among the performance fraternity, this might cause some anxiety; however, this added 300-plus mm of wheelbase adds only 136 kilograms of overall weight and, frankly, most of that comes from the new 136-litre gas tank. The addition of the SuperCrew does something else, though - it puts this truck into the sights of the off-road work community.

Tens of thousands of people make their living offroad - on both sides of the border. However, their need for ability is just as important as space -they are rarely alone and the three-person back seat in the Raptor, with that great flat floor, is perfect forgetting the crew in and out of just about anywhere. In a nutshell, that's why I have my woollies on while driving the shore of Lake Superior in this new, longer (3,683-mm wheelbase) Raptor.

The new 6.2L V-8 engine (replacing the 5.4L) also adds towing capability for 2011. With the tow package (which includes an integrated trailer brake controller), the Raptor will tow 3,629 kg. The payload is 468 kg.

Also standard now is a 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen (as found on the SuperDuty) and SelectShift Automatic transmission. This system lets the driver lock out as many gears as required -this is in addition to the manual and trailer tow modes.

Part of the Raptor's aggressive footing comes from the unique SVT-tuned 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain TA/ KO 315/70-17 tires. With these tires, the Raptor has 284 mm of front suspension travel and 307 mm of rear suspension travel on either SuperCab orthe new SuperCrew. Either version comes with a 5.5-foot box.Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility.

Also available this year is a Raptor Luxury Package, which will feature folding power exterior mirrors, remote start, integrated spotter mirror, express up/down driver and passenger front windows, 110-volt outlet in the centre console, head restraints for the second-row middle seat and a telescoping steering wheel.

The new SuperCrew Raptor will be available for a set price (with a long list of standard equipment, different from what is available in the United States) for $53,119. Orders are being taken now - trucks will roar into town late this fall.

Shoe Carnival Steps Up

Shoe Carnival Inc. recently posted fourth quarter earnings of 33 cents per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 31 cents and showing a marked improvement from 20 cents earned in the year-earlier quarter.

However, adverse weather in the Midwest in December and January resulted in lower volumes sold. Comparable store sales grew 4.6% year over year in the quarter. What makes money in fashion?

Is fashion an art form or is it really just about making money? A day after the final pret-a-porter show in Paris WWD, the American clothing industry newspaper's headline read, "It's all about accessories, right?"

Presuming they had simply cut to the chase and honed in on what every business-brained executive wants to know post-collections - never mind the clothes, what are the accessories like? - I read on.

Actually the point the business-led authority was trying to make was that buyers and the press had this season found many of their best discoveries off-runway.

These days, catwalk show shoes (bags are a rare sight in autumn/winter shows) are more often just one style worn by all models to blend in/punch up the theme of the collection.

The actual "shoe of the season" by Chanel, Prada or Louis Vuitton can be found away from the bright lights and bustle of the show, in the candle-scented silent showroom.

Showrooms are where big business is done and besides cosmetics and perfumes, it's bags, boots and shoes rather than clothes that reap the greatest financial rewards for the men-in-suits behind LVMH and Gucci Group, etc.

Yes, fashion really is all about accessories (and perfumes and cosmetics).

Let's examine which brands in the current global economic slump are doing well. Not whom you might expect. Primark, Benetton and Next which offer fashion at a lower budget, have all seen a decrease in net sales recently.

Last week, the Italian high street giant Benetton announced that their profits had dropped by 17 per cent. Even Primark, which has been one of the strongest retail performers in recent years, barely made a 3 per cent profit in figures released in last month.

With luxury retailers, which rely on accessories as the heart and soul of their business, it's a different matter altogether. The Italian luxury footwear brand Tod's has just posted a 28.6 per cent increase in net profits to Dh537 million - a leap of Dh99m on last year's figures.

The Rome-based fine jeweller, Bulgari, has just announced that profits are up Dh184m, mainly through growth of watch sales. No wonder LVMH has paid Dh19 billion for a 50.4 per cent stake in the business - the biggest takeover in a decade, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek magazine - and far more than it paid to get Hermès into its luxury goods stable last October.we've already seen three classic Air max classic models in their flagship colorways release.

Even though executives love it when a designer such as Christophe Decarnin can sell humble ripped jeans for Dh5,918, or lure another 20 princesses into the haute-couturesalon, as Riccardo Tisci has done for Givenchy, sales of accessories, or perfume, or cosmetics in particular are the best way to claw back the expense of theatrical catwalk presentations and advertising campaigns.

This October, in a topsy turvy turn of events, the Indian designer Manish Arora will create a ready-to-wear line for Paco Rabanne, the first in five years (traditionally you establish a successful clothing line before launching a blockbuster fragrance).

What ever happened to Paco Rabanne, the designer who invented the chain metal dress? Who cares. American Idol Recap: Meet Your Top 12

And then... there were 12. I mean, we all know the 13th contestant was an irrelevant extra, right? Oh well, poor diva Ashton sang her swan song last week. Read the following to see who will probably be next.

Contestant: Naima Adedapo Song: Whats Love Got To Do With It

Wardrobe: I get that she's supposed to represent the cultural, African flavor girl of the bunch but can she at least match her colors just a little? Or have her ponytail sit on top of her head without looking like a live bird who's trying to fly away? Sorry girl, I would normally like your style but its just a bit too much right now. Tone it down a little.

Performance: Hmm.. that was a little too Rihanna-induced for me. I swear its like a Glee mash-up of What's My Name and Whats Love Got to Do With It. I half expected Drizzy Drake to come out and bust a rhyme.

Contestant: Paul McDonald Song: I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues

Wardrobe: I like the lavender collared shirt and the string tie is cute too. The skinny jeans are too tight for my liking though. Let those bad boys breathe Paul!

Performance: He's been dubbed by Steven Tyler as the "Cool dude with a loose mood." I get that. And at times, I totally dig it. But for christ sake man, stand still for a few minutes! Watching you perform makes me feel like I drank a lot of Rum but I haven't had any at all! I love, love, love the tone of your voice and I'm feeling the country, blues vibe.I'm a small investor in a startup company deploying a podiatrist-patented method for adding comfort to high-fashion, high-heel shoes for women. I just don't want to feel nauseated watching you perform.

Contestant: Thia Megia Song: Colors of the Wind

Wardrobe: I would have preferred her hair pulled back a little just to see her feather earring more. It would have sold the whole Pocahontas theme better. The dress could have been sexy... on a voluptuous girl, but on her.Buy Knee High Boots with a price guarantee and top rated customer service...eh, simply no. She's your typical cute Asian girl, so why is she wearing this outfit that does nothing for her?!

Performance: Bo-ring. Yep, that's it. That's all I have to say. Am I really supposed to believe that was the best song in 1995 that she could choose?! Ugh. This is my biggest pet peeve about young singers. No knowledge of music history equals stupid song choices. SMH

Contestant: James Durbin Song: I'll Be There For You

Wardrobe: Still coming off as a wannabe-Adam Lambert with the hairdo. But I like the brown leather jacket and studded boots. Please get rid of the dangling cloth. It has no purpose whatsoever!! It just annoys me. And the earring, yeah... it still reminds me of George Michael.

Performance: I had high expectations for this coz I'm a major Bon Jovi fan, especially with this song. But I have to say it was actually better than I expected. He definitely gave it his all. A little pitchy at times but he found his way through it.

Contestant: Hailey Reinhart Song: I'm Your Baby Tonight

Wardrobe: Love the red blouse and minimalistic black tights with the pumps. The red lipstick was a little all over your face but hey, it happens to the best of us, girl. The gold earrings were a nice accessory and the whole look just fit well with the era of your song choice.

Performance: It was shaky, but I love the jazz influence she tried to put in there. Yes, she was a little awkward in her movement, yes it could have been a little more controlled. But overall, it had mad potential and when she figures out how to be comfortable onstage, she'll be a definite contender.

Contestant: Stefano Langone Song: If You Don't Know Me By Now

Wardrobe: He definitely knows how to dress. The pink shirt,More information about nike air max 97 shoes including release dates and prices. white kicks, and stylish jeans work well on him. For once, he doesn't look like he's trying too hard or wearing something made by Ed Hardy. I might actually see what J-Lo sees in that pretty boy face.

Performance: An excellent song choice!! Finally! Good for you Stefano. You hit every note except that last one (which was unnecessary to begin with). The phrasing was on point and you actually connected with the song. It definitely showed and you kicked ass. Randy said it was the best performance of the night. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with "the Dog."

Contestant: Pia Toscano Song: Where Do Broken Hearts Go?

Wardrobe: The white, off the shoulder, one piece jumpsuit is not cute girl. You look like a poor man's J-Lo. SMH

Performance: The vocals were good. But I was too distracted by the horrid arrangement. This is the new nike air max 90 in Pecan, Black and Varsity Royal. Why turn this beautiful classic Whitney ballad into a second-rate disco version of what it really is?! Regardless, I still do not see why this girl has made it this far. There is nothing remotely distinct or special about her. I mean yeah, Ashton was a diva but at least she had a personality. Either way, Pia is not wow-ing me at all.

Contestant: Scotty McCreery Song: Can I Trust You With My Heart?

Wardrobe: He's wearing jeans, a shirt, and a light brown jacket. So simple and all-American, yet he is positively adorable. A little bit Eric Forman, a little bit country... I like it. His blue shirt matches perfectly with his blue eyes too. Nice touch.

Performance: I still can't believe he's not an older man when I hear him sing. His voice is so deep and rich, and yet he makes it look effortless. I love the song choice. I know I'm biased coz I'm a country girl, but I'm truly smitten. You can totally trust me with your heart, Scotty. Stay country. Love it.

Contestant: Karen Rodriguez Song: Love Will Lead You Back

Wardrobe: She is wearing a dress that only Fergie would wear at a crazy, space age-themed BEP concert. (No, that's not a compliment in case you were wondering). Her hair is like a bump-it that imploded if it was a hatch on the island of Lost. Her earrings are big enough to strangle babies. I'm obviously not into it. I know she sang a Selena song but does she have to dress like her too? It's 2011, seniorita.

Performance: Good song choice. I was actually impressed and feeling it until... the god awful Spanish crept its way back like a bed intruder in the projects. Needless to say,Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility. it ruined it for me. Let's be real girl, this isn't Spanish Idol. ENOUGH with the Spanish!!!!!!!

Contestant: Casey Abrams Song: Smells Like Teen Spirit

Wardrobe: He's like a mini Zach Galifianakis. Especially with that handkerchief around his neck. At times I wish he'd have a more interesting style since he is so unique musically. Maybe we can get him a stylist by the time he makes it to the top 5?

Performance: First of all, mad props for doing Nirvana on Idol. He started off slow, but nailed the grunge at the end. He's "crazy and talented" as Steven Tyler said. It wasn't the best performance of the night or even his best performance personally, but it still rocked. This kid is entertaining enough to watch in any venue no matter what he sings.

Contestant: Lauren Alaina Song: I'm The Only One

Wardrobe: Cute jacket! I like this girl's style. She's country trendy but not in an obnoxious way. She picks the right pieces and manages to look hip and classy. I could do without the two-toned hair though.

Performance: Another suitable song choice. I was worried the flu would take over, but she held her own. And that's not easy channeling Melissa Ethridge. I do think the raspy voice helped her in this situation. But she's a talented girl and I think she deserves to make it to the next round more than some of these other girls.

Contestant: Jacob Lusk Song: Alone

Wardrobe: Hmmm... I don't know about that jacket. It's like a military jacket / blazer that is confused about its identity. Did that even make sense? I've been watching this show for too long...

Performance: Sigh. I think he's a talented singer. He can sing every note known to man but does he really have to? Also, can we get more of a progression instead of this beginning, jump to loud shouting, and then the end?? I'm like, completely lost. The judges liked that?! I wanna root for you Jacob but please... calm down with your runs. You'd make Xtina blush.

Tune in tomorrow to see which poor schmuck bites the dust.

The Measure of a Hunting Boot

Two pieces in an upland hunter's arsenal receive most of the attention,This is the new nike air max 90 in Pecan, Black and Varsity Royal. bird dogs and shotguns. Obviously, most dogs are companions well beyond the scope of "equipment," and most shotguns are either heirlooms or expensive, or both. In that sense, there's a kinship with both.

Hunting boots aren't cracking the top two, ever. Many pairs are expensive enough,Offers women's sexy high heels including boots, mules, platform shoes, pumps and sandals. but all boots eventually deteriorate, and unique foot odors don't do their depreciation any favors. Still, some hunters manage to become attached to their boots in more than just an "I wear them" sort of way. I recently came across a hunting boot thread on an upland hunting forum in which one hunter proclaimed to have worn the same pair of leather boots for 23 years, his time-defying secret being he occasionally has them resoled. Like most relationships, he infers, you need to patch things up now and again.Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we.

I'm not looking to approach a silver anniversary with my next pair, but am currently a footwear free agent, and want more than just a fall fling. My previous two pairs lasted one and two years, respectively, which wasn't even enough time for my unique foot odor to bond.

How long should a good hunting boot last? Read forums and reviews, and most hunters - like 23 year boot guy – rate the quality of a boot by how many years or seasons they've lasted. This can be a poor account if you don't factor how many days, how many miles or what types of terrain a particular hunter is working. The guy hunting upland birds 40 days a year in Montana may be visiting the boot shop more than the guy who hunts two weekends in South Dakota every October.

As a former distance runner,Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility. I also can't help but think about the "miles" aspect. As a general guideline, runners are encouraged to replace their shoes every 500 miles or so. Even if shoes aren't worn out, this prevents the runner from reaching a point where shoes can compromise physical condition. Upland boots are made of more durable materials and therefore should last much longer than running shoes. Still, the concept is an interesting one: hunters - who can log just as many, if not more miles than runners – measuring performance in miles rather than months. Where my boots may not be lasting me long enough – a quality issue – others may be risking injury by pushing their boots too far – a quantity issue.

I'd buy a boot that's comfortable knowing it's only going to last one season over a boot that wasn't quite as comfortable that would last multiple seasons. How important is comfort?

I definitely have some more research to do before I buy, and if you're in the market for a new pair of hunting kicks, you should too. You might not love 'em like a bird dog or collect them like guns, but it pays to make hunting boots the worthy third – they're with you every step of the way.Buy Knee High Boots with a price guarantee and top rated customer service.

When the Sheen wears off the relationship, TV series often drop actors

Much has been made in recent weeks about Charlie Sheen's massive paychecks and even bigger ego, something that won't be a problem any more for Warner Bros. Television and Two and a Half Men.

But if the hit CBS sitcom really does go forward next season without Sheen, as apparently is the plan, there is still the pesky matter involving the size of the troubled actor's shoes. Shoes that are going to be mighty hard to fill.

The same is true for whoever gets selected to replace likable Steve Carell once he parts ways, on much friendlier terms, with The Office later this season.

It's entirely possible that these shows can remain hits without their longtime leading men. The replacement game is practically an annual TV ritual, with classic characters and beloved stars coming and going with revolving-door regularity. Yet it's hardly a sure thing that the two shows will survive.

History of animosity

While most splits are amicable (such as George Clooney's departure from ER, William Petersen's farewell from CSI and David Duchovny's reduced presence during the final seasons of The X-Files), sometimes, as with the feud that led to Sheen's firing this month, it gets very ugly and goes very public.

Suzanne Somers knows what that's like.More information about nike air max 97 shoes including release dates and prices. The former Three's Company star took the hit 30 years ago in a salary dispute that "spun out of control almost before it ever really began," she says.

When Three's Company began its fifth season, Somers asked for a hefty pay raise (from $30,000 an episode to $150,000, a fraction of the $1.2 million per episode that Sheen had recently been making).Buy mens classic boots with a price guarantee and top rated customer service. Not only was she rebuked by the network and studio,I'm a small investor in a startup company deploying a podiatrist-patented method for adding comfort to high-fashion, high-heel shoes for women. but "they chose to make an example of me," she says.

Somers became persona non grata on the set and was denied contact with co-stars John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt. Her role was reduced to one minute per episode and, to film her segments, she was escorted by security guards to a separate soundstage. At the end of the season, she was pink-slipped.

"I was on 55 national magazine covers that first year of Three's Company," Somers recalls. "My life went from being totally anonymous to being so unbelievably public ... and then, almost as quickly, like in the blink of an eye, I had become blacklisted within the industry."

Making matters even more painful was that, while Somers basically had to start over, the show continued to thrive with Priscilla Barnes brought in as Ritter and DeWitt's new on-screen roommate.

The public humiliation was something Somers "wouldn't wish on my worst enemy," she says.

Not so smooth moves

Other stars have become show-business laughingstocks over their feuds with, and early departures from, hit shows.

When David Caruso wanted to bolt after one season of overnight success on NYPD Blue (he was replaced by Jimmy Smits), he was allowed to leave but came off looking like an egomaniac -- and he paid for his hubris with a going-nowhere film career that included, fittingly, a movie titled Kiss of Death. Now the longtime leading man on CSI: Miami, a humbler Caruso has says he "learned my lesson."

Farrah Fawcett didn't fare much better in the movies when she left Charlie's Angels after one season. It took many years for her to find her bearings as an actress, while replacement "Angel" Cheryl Ladd immediately fit in and the show ran four more years.

Shannen Doherty, who is known for being a difficult presence on the set, was fired from two series, Beverly Hills 90210 (after four seasons and replaced by Tiffani Thiessen) and Charmed (after three, replaced by Rose McGowan). Both shows kept going strong for many years without her.

McLean Stevenson ditched M*A*S*H after three seasons, thinking he should headline his own show. His subsequent star vehicle was a stinker called Hello, Larry, and he became an industry punch line as a result.

When Valerie Harper waged a salary dispute with the producers of her sitcom Valerie, they killed off her character and brought in Sandy Duncan. The show, renamed The Hogan Family, ran four more years.

And then there's the case of Shelley Long, who endured a "how dare she?" backlash for having the audacity to leave her Emmy-winning gig as the leading lady on Cheers.Find a fashionable range of women boots and ladies shoes all in one place online.

Actually, Long protests being lumped into the same category with Fawcett, Caruso and Stevenson.

Here's why: "I had a contract for five years, and I finished my contract," says Long, who was replaced by Kirstie Alley. "Once I finished my contract,Love womens Wedge Shoes? So do we. it was up to me: Did I want to stay or not? But some mean-spirited stuff started coming, some it from the Cheers people. Ted Danson has admitted that to me. And it came from fear, as most stupid things do.

"I guess they felt that the show wasn't going to be able to continue without me. I kept saying: 'Wait a minute. Look at all the talent here. That's not going to happen.' In actuality, me leaving gave the show a second life. But nobody figured that out until later. And by then, hurtful things had been said."

Taking chances

It's always something of a crapshoot how a key personnel change will affect a show. Sometimes it's a shot in the arm; other times, it's a huge and immediately obvious mistake.

When Mission: Impossible brought in Peter Graves as the leader of the team in Season 2 (replacing Steven Hill), it was a great move. The show later jettisoned Martin Landau and Barbara Bain (replacing them with Leonard Nimoy and Lesley Ann Warren), which was not so smart.

M*A*S*H endured frequent cast changes (Stevenson out, Harry Morgan in; Wayne Rogers out, Mike Farrell in; Larry Linville out, David Odgen Stiers in; Gary Burghoff out, expanded role for Jamie Farr). The comedy continued to thrive, but each change took the show farther away from its finest moments.

When Law & Order brought in Jerry Orbach (for George Dzundza) and Jill Hennessy (for Richard Brooks), the show benefited greatly. Later moves, such as replacing Angie Harmon with Elisabeth Rohm and replacing Orbach with Dennis Farina, weren't so effective.

Charlie's Angels broke even in the Ladd-for-Farrah exchange, but replacing Kate Jackson with Shelley Hack (and with Tanya Roberts a year after that) coincided with the show's fall from grace.

When CSI: Miami ditched Kim Delaney midway through its first season (allowing more screen time for co-star Emily Procter), it was right for cast chemistry. But adding Eddie Cibrian essentially added nothing and the ultimate solution was to kill off his character.

After Raymond Burr died in 1993, NBC showed questionable taste by making more Perry Mason mystery movies, with Paul Sorvino and Hal Holbrook handling the cases while Mason was "out of town."

Even Sheen has been on the other side of the replacement game equation. When Michael J. Fox left Spin City after four seasons because of Parkinson's disease, Sheen took over as the male lead, extending the show's life two more seasons.

One of the most creative character handoffs, meanwhile, occurred on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Terry Farrell played the humanoid host for an alien life form; when she bid farewell to the show, the alien inside her was transferred to a new host, played by Nicole deBoer.

That's probably not a viable plot possibility for Two and a Half Men, even though everyone seems to be wondering what's gotten into Charlie Sheen.
