Runners head outdoors as brutal winter fades

Every runner has a different quibble with the cold. Emma Nelson is not a fan of the arctic air.

"Your nose gets cold," said Nelson, a Cresskill resident who manages Team Women's Edge (WE) Sports, a Ridgewood-based club that trains women for road races, triathlons and other competitive sports. "It hurts to even rub it."

Cynthia Sanchez fears she might slip on a section of iced-over pavement.

"It passes through everybody's mind," said Sanchez, a 40-year-old Woodland Park resident. "Some people run right over ice like nothing. I come to a complete stop, tippy toe and continue running."

Antoinette Marmora of Jersey City hates piling on layers before she sets a single foot outside. What can you find replica shoes Christian Louboutin?

"One of the things I like about being indoors during the winter is the amount of clothes I've got to deal with," Marmora said. "Shorts,He said the home furnishings industry typically gets its color cues from edhardysale and other women's accessories in Europe. T-shirt, jog away."

Many runners do brave the elements. They bundle up and log those hard miles outside.

Some do not. Some are like bears,SOSpenders Lifejackets are state-of-the-art portalnikeairmax. hibernating 'til spring, when those roads look inviting again. They spend the winter on a treadmill, or on an elliptical machine, or on a couch. And sometimes those first spring runs are killers.

"For all the miles I do on a treadmill," 39-year-old Nutley resident Spencer Schwartz wrote in an e-mail, "when I return to the pavement, I feel winded, like it's my first day on the road."

So what is the secret, now that spring is within reach? After one of the worst winters in recent memory, a winter that forced some of the most dedicated runners off the roads, is there a way to ease the transition from that revolving treadmill belt to the great outdoors?

"You want to start getting your body used to the road again," Nelson said. "So maybe [some] good advice would be to do the track,Riders wear long underwear beneath their blogswholesaleedhardy, and the horses wear special cleats. maybe do some trail work. Some easy, light trail stuff, hard-packed dirt, a little bit of grass running.Welcome to wholesale clothingshop shoes sale online store-the best cheap lv supplier on the Internet."

It's tricky, Nelson admitted. Sometimes you feel deceptively better outside. Sometimes those gentle temperatures make you overestimate your limits.

"Suddenly you realize you have another five miles to go home," Nelson said. "It's better to stay close to home. It seems like it's warmer than it really is."

Nelson also recommends purchasing a new pair of shoes for the spring season. All that indoor treadmill and cross-training work can beat up a pair of shoes. Why not start fresh?

And leaving the gym opens up other possibilities that are more difficult to simulate on the machines.

"Now you can work on more hills," Sanchez said. "We work out by the boat basin by the George Washington Bridge in Edgewater. … It's actually a lot harder out in the streets, but it's a better workout."

Pain aside, most runners are itching to get back on the streets and trails.

"I would also rather run 10 miles outdoors than do three miles trying to distract myself from the monotony that is characteristic of 'treading,' " Schwartz wrote.

"It's so much easier to go outside, do five, six miles, than go on a treadmill," said 27-year-old Tricia Tumminello, a 27-year-old Weehawken resident who grew up in Saddle Brook.

Besides, there is something pleasant about inhaling the first scents of spring, not a sweaty pair of tube socks.
