A group of parents planned a big surprise for the high school teachers and staff over winter break. The teacher’s lounge at Hamilton-Wenham Regional had little elves come in while the teacher’s were on vacation and gave it an extreme makeover.
The lounge needed a bit of a facelift. The space described as “pleasant and comfortable enough” looked like it was stuck in a time warp between 1962 when the school was built and the 80’s.
Parents decided that a coat of paint, some new carpet, and new chairs would go a long way to spruce it up. But in true Hamilton-Wenham fashion, where talents and community spirit come together, the results went far beyond that.
Janine Richards, Foreign Language teacher said that teacher’s literally couldn’t believe their eyes when they walked into school Monday morning.
“Parents have done many wonderful, thoughtful things for the staff over the years but this really was extraordinary,” Richards said. “ I kept waiting for Ty Pennington to jump out and tell us we won an Extreme Makeover! Merci, gracias, thank you to all those who gave us their time and creativity!”
Gail Lake, from the Visual Arts Department, was impressed with the makeover.
“Everything has been changed: the walls are painted a soft cream new rugs new couches, end tables and lamps. The ugly cubbies were ripped out and replaced with open large shelving with beautiful colored glass,” Lake said. “All of us are humbled by the fact the parents group came in over Christmas and did all this work.Welcome to our shop or just enjoy browsing through our stunning collection available inflatable boats for sale in our shop. As a faculty we are so grateful to all involved; especially Lisa Kawski.It is an email notification service that notifies buyers about the recent additions to the ed hardy Shirt available with the company. Charlotte Lidrbauch and Kathy Swierzewski who took all our needs into consideration for the redesign. We are all thrilled to have an oasis in the school.”
The Blizzard of 2010 temporarily halted the work on the surprise makeover but work began once roads were cleared on Dec. 27 and lasted through Dec. 30.We also offer pads and mats for dog crates which will offer all the comfort that is need to your pet while it is in the crate or lacoste shoes. Principal Matthew Fox gave his seal of approval for the secret project.
Lisa Kawski, a parent and principal of lmk interiors, ltd. in Wenham, volunteered her design services. Kawski assisted in choosing paint colors, made flooring recommendations, and utilized her designer discounts in purchasing materials where possible.You can never have too many designer accessories, and this inflatable life jackets 'Jelly' Laptop Case is just too cute to pass up!
The goal of the surprise was to make it happen with private funds, and not pull from any Friends of the HWRHS funds, which are reserved for purchases and activities directly impacting students.
A call for volunteers for labor as well as money was sent out and the response was strong. Volunteers did all the painting, moving of furniture, and cleaning. The main expense was flooring. Volunteers ripped up the old carpeting and put in place FLOR tiles. They chose to use FLOR tiles which are made from renewable and recycled content and are recyclable.
Husband and wife team of Irv Levy and Kathy Swierzewski picked up and delivered the two new couches from Jordan’s Furniture to the school on Friday. Matched with new lamps, pillows, color coordinated accent pieces, the room looks like a designer showroom.
There was a bouquet of flowers on the table when the teacher’s returned from the break, with a card thanking them for the wonderful work they do with the students.
Joanne Leary,I looked down and there was this inflatable swimming pools filled with water, it was the magic that this pool was suddenly there. a teacher at HWRHS was thrilled.
“On Monday we returned from our winter break to find a well needed facelift had been performed in our teachers lunch/work room. We are grateful for this gift from the parents of the high school students. Many parents worked along side their children taking on this challenge removing old carpeting, repainting walls, reupholstering chairs and updating furniture. We all look forward to enjoying this warm and inviting room for years to come. What a great way to start off the year, thank you!”
Connie Hoar, Physical Education teacher, felt that the gesture improved the working environment for the teachers.
“I just want to express my sincere appreciation for the kind gesture that the parents extended for the faculty in improving our working environment. After the holiday break it made for and extended "vacation day" to have such a great gift! The room is absolutely breathtaking with vivid colors and new furniture. So thank you parents and students for your efforts — we love it!”
