Some women who work for Exxon Mobil hosted a crawfish boil this week, drawing attention to their claim that the company is pinching pennies.
The 41 clerical workers at the company's chemical and refinery complex in Baytown are steamed, saying they've been denied raises - because of their gender - by a company that reported a $10.6 billion first-quarter profit this week.
"They can't afford to give us a raise?" asked Terri Melchor, tenant services administrator who has worked at the complex for 31 years and earns $29.85 an hour. A 3 percent raise, nike air max provides the ultimate in impact protection reducing shock and distributing pressure to provide you with absolute comfort and stability. such as many other at the plant got this year and last, would boost her hourly wage by 90 cents.
Refinery, chemical plant and lab workers at the Baytown facilities got 3 percent raises the last two years, and for 2012, the company agreed to match the union-negotiated wage at other company sites. The workers, who are represented by the United Steelworkers Union, also received $2,500 signing bonuses for ratifying the new three-year deal.
The workers in the office clerical unit at the complex are represented by the same union, and their contract expired March 15.Thousands of discount ed hardy shoes styles for selection. But the company is denying raises or lump-sum bonuses to the support staffers, who are all women.
The United Steelworkers Union Local 13-2001 represents about 1,000 workers at the complex. Most of them are men - process operators, instrument technicians and analyzer technicians - who got the more lucrative three-year contract last year. But the 41 women continue to work under their old agreement.
Exxon Mobil offered to reopen the contract in subsequent years to reconsider a raise, said Melanie Lombard, an operations and maintenance procedure coordinator who has worked for the company for 28 years.
But the deal includes a provision that employees won't strike over the raise offer, said Richard "Hoot" Landry, staff representative for the union.
"That means it's a take-it-or-leave-it proposition," he said.
Neely Nelson, public and government affairs manager for Exxon Mobil Corp. in Baytown, said in a statement that the company doesn't consider it appropriate to discuss proposal specifics away from the bargaining table.
"I will say that we have maintained open, honest and productive communication with the union, our employees and stakeholders, and we'll continue to negotiate in good faith and engage in responsible, meaningful dialogue with the union," Nelson said.
Landry said the contract offer did increase the meal allowance for employees who work overtime and an allowance to purchase safety shoes. But he said most of the women don't work overtime and don't need safety shoes.
"They're telling us we're overpaid," said Sheryl Webster, machinery information assistant and a member of the union's negotiating committee. She has worked for Exxon Mobil for 33 years and earns $29.85 an hour.
She said a company negotiator told the women that Exxon Mobil could run an ad and receive 1,Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility .000 applications for one of the positions at the current wage.
Webster said the company did a survey comparing the clerical workers' average wage of $27.65 an hour to similar employees elsewhere. But she said the survey examined wages in non-energy industries such as banking and retail.
"We're not just data entry clerks," said Lombard, ticking off analytical and problem-solving work she and her colleagues do.
The women have taken to wearing pink polo shirts with union logos to symbolize their "pink-collar" status, a category that designates service work done mostly by women.
They showed up at Exxon Mobil's annual shareholder's meeting earlier this week in Dallas, where Fran Campbell said she got a chance to tell CEO Rex Tillerson she considers it unfair that she and her 40 colleagues aren't getting raises.2011 New Style Jeans cheap true religion on sale with fast delivery!
"He was very kind, and he listened to me," said Campbell, a contract data management administrator and 21-year Exxon Mobil employee. But she also noted to her co-workers that Tillerson's total compensation package last year was $29 million.
George Legere, an operator at the plant, was among colleagues who lent his support at the crawfish boil Thursday, sharing 500 pounds of the crustaceans served at the union hall in the shadows of the Exxon Mobil complex.
"I don't believe they're getting a fair shake in this deal," Legere said. "They're part of us. They should be under our umbrella."
Part of the difficulty is that the women's contract has a different expiration date than those of other workers at the complex.
And because they formerly belonged to an independent union, they lack the job security and other protections won by the United Steelworkers Union and its predecessors.
Consequently, the women have been denied raises before. One year members of the operator group donated part of their lump-sum bonuses to the clerical group.
Lombard, whose grandfather worked for the company, said it feels like she's fighting the same battle women have fought over the past 100 years for equal treatment in the workplace.

"I'm tired of being treated like I'm not worth anything," she said.
