Teaneck-based footwear and orthotics maker Aetrex Worldwide Inc. has made its first move into branded retail stores, and based on early results it looks like a step in the right direction.
The company's first Aetrex-brand retail store opened on Palisade Avenue in Englewood three weeks ago, in advance of a grand opening event planned for next month. Executive Vice President Matt Schwartz said Tuesday that initial response "has been great." He said the store has been in "soft" or unadvertised mode for the first weeks as it gets up to speed, but that word of mouth has drawn new customers.
The company's plan is to use the Englewood location as a flagship, and as a model for its existing wholesale customers — shoe store owners — who want to open their own Aetrex-branded stores.
"Our core channel of distribution for the brand is the service-oriented shoe stores, from The Walking Co., to the local family shoe store," Schwartz said.Via Trading carries a wide range of branded wholesale shoes from famous specialty shoe stores and retail chains at a fraction of their original value. "A lot of those business owners own branded stores as well. They might own a New Balance, or an Ecco store." Aetrex plans to license stores to independent owners, as well as operate company-owned stores. The company has been approached by about half-dozen business people around the country who have expressed interest in opening an Aetrex store.
