What's Priority In The County's Budget?

As a business owner, Scott Dvorak knows taxes are necessary. He's been in the running shoe business for 11 years; the last 6 years, Charlotte Running Company has been serving customers in Dilworth. It was an uphill challenge the last two years as business slowed down at his store, but now, he's on track to have a great year.

"I'd hate to see that get derailed just because people are financially stricken again with higher taxes."

Dvorak says he's worried over the county's property revaluations. He saw a 20% jump in his South Charlotte home. "Initially, I was like whoa!"

If his neighbors experienced the same thing,Nike air max tn was created in order to maintain a balance of the athletes' movement. then a higher property tax might cause consumers to stop buying things like running shoes and clothes, just to pay their tax bill.

"You've got money allotted," says Dvorak, "and when you're paying bills, you know where your money is going. Then when you get hit with something you don't expect, it puts you in panic mode and it kinda stops the wheels."

Elyse Dashew lives Southeast Charlotte, an area that also saw a drastic jump in property revaluations. Her kids go to Smith Language Academy, so as a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools parent, Dashew wants what County Commissioner Jennifer Roberts wants: keep the current property tax rate at 83.97 cents per $100 valuation, and then use the extra tax money for education.

"We need to get $55 million back to CMS," says Dashew. "I think the cost of setting our schools backwards, the costs of making our school system weaker, is much greater.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff Chipp Bailey sent a letter to Commissioner Roberts on Thursday, expressing aggravation at the idea that county employees, like his deputies, may once again lose out on raises and benefits,Fashion wash urban authentic gucci shoes styles in a great variety of colors and style! so that CMS gets the money its requesting. "We understand that everybody is hurting.Yesterday marked one of the most iconic nike air max 97 releases."

That issue was implied when Commissioner Roberts released a statement saying the current property tax rate should remain flat, and $40 million should be allocated to the school district.

"This is about my feelings for my employees and the other employees of Mecklenburg County," said Sheriff Bailey. "They need a fair shake in this budget because in the past budgets they've sat quietly."

Sheriff Bailey is not asking for a certain property tax rate be adopted by commissioners, but if more money does comes in, he believes it needs to be fairly spread around.

The whole commission holds its budget workshop June 1st.
