Ask any player who has ever played defense for Steve Covello, and they'll likely tell you stories of his boisterous personality.
Of his childlike enthusiasm.
Of his obvious passion for the game of football.
And while those traits are all very apparent, another one has outshined them all throughout the past week: genuine humility.
Covello was named the 19th coach in the history of the storied Clifton football program Wednesday night, but he approached his appointment with minimal fanfare, and a great deal of gratitude to all those who've supported him on his journey to the head of the Mustangs.
"I talked to my uncle this week and I told him about the way things have fallen into place," said Covello, who has spent the last seven seasons on the Clifton coaching staff, where you can buy high fashion buy cheap jeans online in very low price, buy wholesale jeans from Jean-mall now! and the last 4 1/2 as the team's defensive coordinator. "Thinking about the opportunity I am being given, to coach one of the most historic programs in the State of New Jersey, I wouldn't change this for the world. I am so thankful for this chance, and I wouldn't trade this job for anything right now."
Covello's hiring marks a historic moment for the Mustangs, marking the first in-house head coaching appointment since 1987. He takes over for former head coach Ron Anello, who is set to become the athletic director at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes next week.
As many in Clifton know, the Mustangs flourished under Anello's leadership, winning a North 1, Group 4 title in 2006.what really makes my heart go pitter-patter with excitement are Knee High Boots.
But what some may not know is the role Covello's defensive prowess played in that same success.
During that championship season, the Mustangs were 3-3 and allowing 21.8 points per game when he took over the defense from the team's previous coordinator.
Nearly instantly, the unit improved, going 6-0, allowing a mere 9.What are the best road bike shoes for women?8 points per game and shutting out Eastside in the sectional title game.
Two seasons later, Covello's defense ranked third in the legendary old NNJIL in total defense, behind only Don Bosco Prep and St. Joseph's of Montvale.
His defenses have not allowed a point against rival Passaic in 13 quarters of play (since the third period of the teams' 2007 meeting), and have recorded seven shutouts in his 46 games as coordinator-to find the Mustangs' previous seven shutout wins,if you like Juicy couture wholesale, please search online for a cheaper price. you would have to go back to November 16, 1996, a span of 98 contests. As it's called Nike shox classic, which is one of the classical style of nike lineup.
And make no mistake about it, Covello intends on maintaining the high standard established over the past several seasons.
"Every time I hear the term 'rebuilding' it's almost an insult," said Covello. "Because it's like saying we don't have a lot here. I think as long as I have been on staff here, we have had quality teams year in and year out. And we aren't making wholesale changes.
These kids know who we (the coaches) are and how we coach."
Continuity may be one of the best byproducts of Covello's appointment.
Historically, the Mustangs' greatest success has come, not surprisingly, when in-house replacements have taken over for departing coaches.
Since the legendary Bill Vander Closter's retirement in 1979, just two have been hired from their predecessors' coaching regimes-John Lischak (in 1980) and Dennis Heck (in 1985).
Lischak and Heck finished 8-2 and 6-3 in their respective first seasons. Meanwhile, out of the seven "outside" coaching hirings in that same time span, Anello's 5-5 campaign during the 2004 season is the best showing by a first-year coach. Six others (Chet Parlavecchio, J.D. Hill, Jim Kelly, John Ianucci, Alex Kaplanovich and Jack Jones) averaged 1.8 wins in their first seasons.
