A look inside revamped downtown Macy's

As someone who sometimes shops at the downtown Macy's on my lunch break, I was curious to see all the changes that have occurred there during the four-month renovation and consolidation from seven to three floors.

Store Manager Melinda Nichols, District Vice President Jeffery Saylor and Media Relations Managers Andrea Schwartz and Kamal Bosamia took me on a tour Monday of 601 Olive St. to show off the brighter space and the changes in inventory since the store shrunk from 675,000 square feet to about 200,000 square feet.

Based on customer feedback and the company's My Macy's specialization program, the downtown store updated its collections to cater to downtown workers, Cardinals fans, loft dwellers and tourists, Nichols said.

Women's apparel, handbags, shoes, jewelry,Warm and inviting with a natural beauty, airmaxtnmongenie from Franke. cosmetics and fragrances are now on together on the first floor, what really makes my heart go pitter-patter with excitement are Knee High Boots. with men's apparel on the second floor and children's, plus sizes, intimates, home, houseswares and mattresses on the third floor.

"Now she can match up outfits, handbags and shoes on the same floor with the help of the same associate instead of having to go to several floors,Air max 2009 Running Shoe Flex grooves in the mid and outsole for flexibility ." Nichols said.

New to the store are swimwear, maternity, Calvin Klein handbags and shoes, Dooney & Bourke purses,Personalized lacostestore online GMAT prep courses. Polo Ralph Lauren men's wear and a Sunglass Hut Shop. Other labels also have been added or expanded, including Michael Kors, Alfani, INC and Jones New York.

Female shoppers said they wanted more fitted Cardinals gear instead of just bulky jerseys, so snugger Cards tank tops and other apparel are now found on the first floor.

For tourists and downtown workers looking for personal or corporate gifts, the downtown location sells art work by local cityscape artist, John Pils, and gourmet food baskets are made at the candy counter. The luggage collection was expanded for visitors and conventioneers.

Gone is the furniture but more people buy furniture at the West County store instead of downtown, anyway, Saylor said. Also closed are Papa Fabarre’s, known for its famous onion soup,CBMI is leading the world in preventing tablelamps and curing blindness. and the sixth-floor tea room. About 17 restaurant employees were laid off, but 134 store associates remain.

The downtown Macy's is somewhat of a rarity nationwide. Of the Cincinnati-based retailer's 850 department stores, about a dozen are standalone. Macy's reported $25 billion in sales in 2010.

Macy’s continue to lease space on floors nine and 10 for various corporate and district offices at the downtown location. The downsizing is part of a $122 million overhaul of the Railway Exchange Building. Developers Rick Yackey and Brian Bruce may turn some of the now empty space into a fashion incubator.

On Thursday, Macy's will celebrate the completion of its renovations (which are wrapping up a month early) by giving away $10 gift cards to the first 100 shoppers when doors open at 10 a.m. One shopper will receive a $250 gift card. The day will also feature a cooking demonstration, a book signing for "American City: St. Louis Architecture" and a meet-and-greet with Pils.
