Around the Town with Lou

Jack Martins was Mineola's best mayor in our history and that's including some wonderful chief executives from both sides of the political spectrum like John Colbert, Bob Hinck, Ann Galante and Ed Smith. If anyone can fill Jack's shoes it is our newly elected Mayor Scott Strauss. He was a member of the NYPD for 20 years rising to the position of detective. He has won many awards for valor and the highest award the “Medal of Honor.” Scott was involved in 9-11 saving lives. He is in charge now with the security of all 15 buildings of the LIJ complex. What a guy! Congrats to his running mates Larry Werther and George Durham. A word of praise for Chris Wales, who, with very few resources, made a credible showing.

Passing our house, Senator Jack Martins took the time to stop by and say “hello” to Grace and I. Jack has showed he can work across the isle working with Democrat Michele Schimel to pass the law that let us vote with the popular and easy lever machines. By the way, our former editor, Joe Rizza, is Jack's rep for this area. Joe and Jack worked together on a number of things when Joe was with the Mineola American.

Anita and Steve Cocheo had dinner at Papa Joes Italian restaurant next to the Herricks movie. Anita was a Mineola school teacher and principal and Steve is in sales. The restaurant is Italian but for St. Patrick's Day they went Irish. Joe had great corned beef and cabbage, bangels and mash and the Guinness was poured all night. This is not too strange since Joe Jordan, the owner, is of Irish descent.

One thousand people attended the two Masses honoring Father Tomaz Gomide, one in English and one in Portuguese. He was ordained in his native Brazil and served there for five years before coming to the United States and Corpus Christi.

He came because of the growing Portuguese population. Rev. Gomide serves not just Mineola but many Island parishes that have large Portuguese populations. Father Gomide also speaks Spanish and Italian.

His ability to speak four languages makes him invaluable. At the Masses were Corpus Christi Pastor Robert Coyle, Msgr. Edward Tarrant, Father Gabriel and Deacon Brian Mannix. In Father Gomide's homily he was humorous, emotional, humble and very serious. He also sang a few lines from My Fair Lady. Get me to the church on time.

Mike Lane lost his job at the Irish Echo after 12 years. The Echo is feeling the economic decline plus new competition of the Irish Examiner.

Marian Fitzpatrick of Raff Avenue was at the Williston Town House with her daughters Maureen Toritto and granddaughters Danielle and Jerrica Toritto.lacoste shoes are considered a glorious beacon of intelligent design. Marian works in sales and her husband John is a plumber.

Thomas and Angela Linehan lunched at the Williston Town House. He is retired after 20 years with the NYPD. He is now in charge of security for Meadowbrooke Pointe in Westbury.

Carl Marchese and Sal Cataldo, two longtime pals, were at the same diner.Offers women's sexy high heels including boots, mules, platform shoes, pumps and sandals. Sal and Carl are the main stays of the local American Legion Post.

We were very sorry to hear of the death of Vicki Mussa, our longtime neighbor. Our condolences to all the family members including her daughters Kathleen, Laraine and brother Lou. Vicky lived in Mineola for over 50 years.
