Local race displays national trends in long-distance running

It was a cold April morning heavy with dew, but the bitter air wasn't enough to keep 23 determined men and women from breaking into a 13.1-mile race.

The third annual Race Against Juvenile Diabetes at Riverside Park in Lexington features Cowlitz County's only half-marathon, and participation in the event and other local organized runs has steadily increased in recent years - a trend that's finding footing throughout the nation.

"With the economy in general, running allows you to make a small investment," said Laura Yoder, a longtime runner and organizer of Sunday's races. Nationwide, the number of people finishing marathon - a grueling 26.2-mile race - has steadily climbed during the past 30 years, but recently race organizers have noticed a burst of runners. More than half a million finished in 2010, up by nearly 100,000 from 2007, according to last year's State of the Sport report by Running USA.

The nonprofit organization reported that shoe sales had risen from $1.47 billion in 1998 to $2.36 billion in 2009. It also found that 10.3 million people finished road races in the United States in 2009, up from 8 million in 2004.

Keli Davenport, president of the Cowlitz Valley Runners, said running offers a way for people to deal internally with the current economic troubles.

"I think it's cheap therapy for a lot of people," she said.Trying to save energy by ditching the iron and wearing wrinkle-free shoesbrands? "I think running addresses the emotional stresses of the recession."

On Sunday, about 100 people ran in a combination of races - half-marathon, 10K, 5K and a Kids Dash Against Diabetes.

Mitch Radella of Pittsburgh finished first place in the 5K race and said he came to the Northwest to run several races,The ten member inspection crew needed to board the 20 ton freighter from a small edhardysuppliersziteme during three foot swells. including one in Oregon on Saturday. He said running is becoming more popular because of its health benefits and growing community.

"It's great for fitness, it's a great way to keep in shape," he said, adding "It's become a more social thing."

In 2011, organizers have scheduled 14 races in Cowlitz County. Davenport, the local running club president, said that five years ago, area runners could only expect about five local events. New to the region this year are the Vancouver marathon and half-marathon on June 19.

She said many runs raise money for causes as race organizers take advantage of the health kick that propels many to start running.

The Race Against Juvenile Diabetes has seen half-marathon participation in increase in recent years, said Taryn Nelson, who helped organize the event through the Longview Pioneer Lions.

However, overall participation was down from last year likely because at least three other races were occurring in the region on Sunday, including the Bridge to Brews race in Portland, Yoder said.

Yoder, a longtime volunteer with the Lions and an even longer-time runner, helped start the race to answer a simple question: "What can we do for our kids?"

Yoder decided to tackle the issue of juvenile diabetes by donating all proceeds from the race to Camp Leo. The Shelton, Wash.- based camp hosts children with diabetes during July and Yoder's event has become a key source of funding for the program.

Jan Norman, who founded Camp Leo in 1990, said the Race Against Juvenile Diabetes provides the camp's largest check.

"This is the biggest fundraiser for Camp Leo there is in the state of Washington," she said.

She said the camp provides education and community to children with diabetes, giving them the knowledge and tools to become self-sufficient.A free-spirited shirtssier takes on the ACG pattern for a splash of bright accents over a dark base.

"The funds ensure that any child that can't come on their own will have funding," Norman said.

"Our mission is to be able to sponsor a minimum of three campers," Yoder said.
