High Country Running: Get a head start on Summer Running Series

I can hardly believe I am announcing that the seventh Annual Flagstaff “Summer” Running Series is just over one month away. There is a foot of snow on the ground, it is 24 degrees and I am debating breaking the powder in my snow shoes or my trusty Salomon Trail runners. However, summer will soon arrive and for the seventh consecutive year, the six races known as the Flagstaff Summer Running Series are a go. This year, sponsorship by Salomon Sports and Northern Arizona Trail Runners Association will help keep the series as a great value.

Last year, a record 194 runners pre-registered for the series and overall these events drew more than 3,000 participants. Sara Wagner and Chris Gomez took top spots in the Open divisions and John Bogen and Grace White-Daly took honors in the Master’s. There was also unprecedented participation from Phoenix runners who revel in the camaraderie that our series provides.

To be included in the series, you must pre-register for all six races by the Run For the Mountain race on May 21. Series prizes are broken out by Masters (40+) and Open (under 40). For the competitive series, the best 3 of 6 races count for only the 10K/15K/Half Marathon distances. For purposes of the series, all 5K races are considered non-competitive and not scored in the standings. If you choose to register for the series as “Non-competitive” you can run any race distance, but you will not be scored in the series standings. Salomon Sports will again sponsor 30 pairs of their top-of-the-line trail running shoes for top prizes. Aspen Sports will also provide great raffle prizes at the free year-end Fratellis Pizza Picnic in the Park. In addition, individual races will track your actual age-on-race-day division for event day age-group prizes. The downtown Hospice Run For Life is a road event.
