Canada’s sweetheart of swing has always looked backward for inspiration and she’s found it in grainy footage of her family celebrating Christmas in 1955 in London.Riders wear long underwear beneath their Polo Shirts, and the horses wear special cleats.
Alex Pangman’s love of jazz is rooted in the 1930s and 1940s but her passion for life sprung in part by the way she was embraced by grandparents in London.
So when it came time to breathe life into a Christmas album she released four years ago, Pangman borrowed something old and something new, taking super-8 video from the 1950s that had been digitalized by her mother.
The video is set to the song that lent it’s name to the album’s title, Christmas Gift.
It shows downtown London crowded with men in suits and hats and ladies wearing furs, and later, the excitement of Christmas morning as her mother and aunt — then little girls — unwrap dolls in their Garfield St. home.opting for a newly engineered Air max 360 cushioning system.

The video was inspired by memories Pangman has of visiting family here and listening to Bing Crosby.

Pangman, turned off by the pop music of the 1990s, was introduced to jazz by a friend who asked her to front his band. She fell in love with vocalists of the 1930s and 40’s, especially those forgotten by all but diehards.
The title track I Want You For Christmas was such a song, associated with Mae Questel, whose voice was the inspiration for Betty Boop.
Pangman is donating proceeds from album sales to raising awareness of the need for organ donors. Her own life was saved by a double lung transplant after cystic fibrosis nearly killed her.
She isn’t just looking to London for it’s past; she plans to be at Aeolian Hall in the spring to launch her next CD, about a year after her most recent appearance here.
But for now, as Christmas approaches, her thoughts, like her music, turn nostalgic.
