AL HAMNIK: Distance legend Rudy Chapa eager to turn the page

Records are set to be broken.

Some collect dust before they fall, while others are smashed quicker than a string of clay pigeons.

In the case of Hammond grad and distance phenom Rodolfo "Rudy" Chapa Jr.,Word of mouth, better known as street credibility is a vital part of the Chivas Air max 2009 athletic shoe phenomenon. his record time of 4 minutes, 4.2 seconds in the 1,600 meters at the 1976 IHSAA track and field state finals was an oldie, but a goodie.

Well, someone finally erased Chapa's name from the record book during the June 3 state meet at Indiana University. Wisconsin-bound Austin Mudd of Center Grove,You can find out history about Air max 360 as well as release dates at Nice Kicks. running as if he had stolen something, turned in a smoking 4:03.

Immediately, a friend who lives in Indianapolis sent a text to Chapa with the news flash and the kid's phone number.

"I talked to Austin Mudd the next morning,Fashion wash urban wholesale jeans styles in a great variety of colors and style!" said Chapa, a former Nike executive. "It was a nice conversation, and I let him know I'm a firm believer that records are made to be broken. So the idea of somebody breaking that record is exciting for me."

But there were no new running spikes sent with a congratulatory note. Let Rudy explain, and no laughing please.

"Six (or) seven, years ago, when (Columbus North's) Christian Wagner was running so well, I knew he might break both records because he had come close as a junior," Chapa said. "I sent him some of the best spikes Nike had to offer, and before he could run the state meet, he got hurt.

"Then less than five years ago, (LaPorte's) Mike Fout was running really well, so I sent him a pair of the nicest spikes that Nike had -- and he got hurt before the state meet."

Chapa paused for effect.

"I wasn't going to send Austin any shoes," he said. "But now that he broke the record, he's getting some stuff sent out. He's a good kid and incredibly talented.Nike shox R4 shoes are very popular and hotsale in our store."

Chapa's converted time of 8:55.10 in the 3,200 meters still stands as the meet's oldest record, but that may be in jeopardy after North Central junior Futsum Zeinasellassie ran an 8:56.76 at state.

"I would love him to break it," Chapa said. "Those records should be owned by other people, not 50-year-old men."

Chapa ran collegiately at Oregon, where he was a seven-time All-American, won the NCAA 5,If you are looking wear to buy sexy Knee High Boots the you have arrive.000-meter championship in 1978 and set the American 3,000-meter record in '79. In 1975, Chapa (8:51) and Hammond High teammates Tim Keough (8:52.8) and Kerry Pinkowski (8:56.2) were ranked 1-2-4, respectively, among the nation's fastest prep two-milers.

"The sub-9-minute -- nobody did it before us and nobody has done it since then, and it's been 37 years," said Pinkowski, executive director of the Chicago Marathon.

Chapa and wife Patricia own an investment firm in Portland, where they live, and have five children, three of whom are college grads.

"It was a special time (at Hammond High)," Chapa said. "Some great things happened during that period, and I was lucky enough to be doing a lot of that with teammates like Kerry and Keough."

Chapa made a rare visit to the region last Friday to give the school's commencement speech. Too bad his alma mater didn't bother to publicize the event.
