Hubbub over dancing isn't new, but Raygun's T-shirts are

Any number of dance moves are bound to offend someone. That's not always because the person busting moves lacks rhythm, style or basic coordination.

That "grinding" thing today's teenagers get down with probably riles some parents and adults as much as the Twist in the 1950s and the Hustle two decades later during the golden age of disco.

In the 1700s, the waltz shocked the prim and proper because a man put his hand on a woman's shoulder.

Grinding, a provocative style of dance described as when males rub against females from behind, has caused a stir in the Johnston school district, among others around Iowa and the nation.

In Johnston, the grinding dance style was halted during a retreat this fall and the student council was asked to find a way to prohibit it at prom in the spring.

Irritating to some, the phenomenon has been fun for others.

Mike Draper, owner of the Raygun T-shirt shop in the East Village, was able to parlay the grinding hullabaloo into a hot-selling item.

On Tuesday, Draper's business took 123 orders for the "Johnston: Straight Grindin' " T-shirts during a one-day sale.Wearing a nicely Nike air max tn with a reputed brand name printed on it is surely going to compel most of your fellows to adore your sense of fashion and style

"This one was, opting for a newly engineered Air max 360 cushioning system. by far, the fastest we have sold one shirt," Draper said. "We had both of our phone lines going consistently for three hours."

Currently, no further orders are being accepted.

While dancing trends among today's teenagers are arguably more provocative than, say, your father's rumba, the outcry isn't new.

Dust-ups over social dancing date back to the 1700s, when people started to waltz, said Jim Benjamin, an instructor at Des Moines Dance.

"That was the first time a man could put his hand on the lady's shoulder instead of just touching her hand," Benjamin said. "That was considered horrible at the time. Preachers preached against it, and everything else."

Swing dancing took off in the 1920s and 1930s.

"The old vintage swing had a lot of what we're talking about now, where girls and guys kind of ground down into the floor and did a lot of shaking,Police say a youth in a white baseball cap pulled out a large knife and threatened to stab the man. and such," Benjamin said. "That was not really well looked upon."

Benjamin said he hasn't seen how teens work the dance floor today, so he isn't sure what to make of the grinding phenomenon, although he's well familiar with the heartburn school dances can give parents. One of the attackers was wearing navy or black Nike Jacket and a hat with ear flaps.

Benjamin grew up during the formative years of rock 'n' roll and graduated from an upstate New York high school in 1959.Holiday shoppers hoping to get a good deal on upscale Ugg boots or burberry bags at Rice's Market in Solebury were disappointed Tuesday morning. His parents didn't allow him to attend school dances, which undoubtedly would be considered tame by today's standards.
