Marathon odyssey nears finish line

After 250 runs and 10,550 kilometres, Cochrane’s marathon man wants to re-acquaint himself with his couch.

But Martin Parnell said tackling the feat in 2010 through sheer force of sweat and worn shoe rubber has been a life’s highlight.

“I’m just thrilled to bits ... to be honest, I didn’t have a clue I could do it,” said Parnell, 55.There's nothing like a little Manolo blahnik goodness in time for the holidays, you know what I'm saying?

On Friday, Parnell will reach his finish line with one final jog of 42.2 km at Cochrane’s Spray Lakes Sports Centre.

It’ll end an odyssey that’s taken him to Yellowknife and last April’s Boston Marathon.

But most of it’s been done locally and forged an appreciation for down-home amenities.

“The pathway system in Calgary is brilliant,” he said.

The starting gun for Parnell’s marathon mission was a trip to Africa where he encountered children hungering for sporting release.

He coupled his efforts with the charitable movement Right To Play, which raises funds fuelling athletic programs for underprivileged children in Canada and abroad.

So far, he’s raised $185,000 towards a goal of $250,000 that he hopes to reach by the end of January.

“It’s sort of a job half-done,” said Parnell, who’s gone through 25 pairs of running shoes.

But it hasn’t come through lack of effort, he said — one that cost him a repetitive leg strain injury last February while conquering Cochrane’s big hills.

“I switched to a walking and running approach — you use different muscles,” he said.

Dr. Bill Hanlon, who’s advised throughout the marathon said Parnell’s done remarkably, though he recommended the runner cut back from daily marathons to just five days a week.

“We learned that with the right physiology and biomechanics, people can do this,” said Hanlon.

All of that allowed him to carry on and visit 60 schools and 12,000 students — many of whom opened their wallets and piggy banks for other kids.marking some of the most interesting puma shoes on the market.

“The kids have been the highlight — no question,” he said.

But so has been finishing the often five-day-a-week pavement poundings.
