It is thought the home-brew - made using bread and fruit - was almost ready to drink when it was seized in the prison's Forth Unit.
Last night one source said: "The cons behind this had obviously timed it so that they had a wee drink for Christmas and New Year.One of the attackers was wearing navy or black Nike Jacket and a hat with ear flaps.
"But they had to make do with fizzy pop and sweeties for their Christmas treat."
The crafty inmates were left fuming that their plot was rumbled - having patiently used protein powder tubs to store the booze next to hot pipes to help it ferment.
Our source said: "They will be furious that the staff have stumbled upon it when it was so close to being ready.Wearing a nicely Nike air max tn with a reputed brand name printed on it is surely going to compel most of your fellows to adore your sense of fashion and style"
But it's just the latest scandal to hit privately run Addiewell jail.
